Belated Christmas Tinsel
I have just this minute completed and uploaded another tutorial - albeit a bit too late for Christmas I thought the technique was something worth sharing as it pretty much can be applied to anything and gives a good grounding in creating your own custom brush. http://www.maidenart.co.uk/christmastinselbrush.html _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Wow! Fantastic technique! Is there a way of working both layers into the same brush, do you think - so you wouldn't have to tweak the settings in between? |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
I explained a little further down the tutorial that I wanted to create 3 layers with various brush tweaks so that I could build up a 3 layer colour depth using individual Hue & Sat layers linked to each layer. But there is no reason why 3 brushes couldn't be mixed to create one layer of lush tinsel but it would be difficult to get the various colours onto the one layer. If your tinsel was to be just Chrome then that would work better. Does that explain? _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Excellent work Becky! I used a similar, though much less effective technique for the tinsel in the snowy street challenge. I just found a suitable brush and played with various dynamics until I was fairly happy, then ran it along a path, as you have done. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
That's the fun part - once you've created your custom brush you can simply stroke the path and viola! there it is. I suppose the technique could be adapted for icicles, fairylights (which I remember you did rather well, David), maybe even a washing line full of clothes, or a shelf full of books. In fact it's all starting to sound like a Friday Challenge "Stroking the Path" _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

I have just had a bash at your tutorial Becky. Thanks for that, easy to understand and enjoyable. I have a year to practice as well. ![]() _________________ ... There is only one difference between a madman and me - The madman thinks he is sane - I know I am mad ... -Salvador Dali |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
I have a question about creating the tinsel brush. I'm using CS and when I come to changing the Shape Dynamics, Scattering etc ... I can click on the lock and they are then saved how I did them but how do I get it to remember the spacing in the brush tip shape section. Or? ... Do I have to set that every time I reload the brush? Sorry ... Its got me totally confused. Wendy |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
The brush engine works differently these days: changing any of the parameters of a brush will be forgotten the next time that brush is chosen from the palette. If you want to keep settings for a changed brush, you need to save it as a new brush so you can choose that one next time. |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
Steve, Sorry, I am new to this. So do I: Defined the brush and save it Select the brush and go to the Brush Palette icon Change Spacing of that particular brush in the Brush Tip Section ... question is how do I save it again? Wendy |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
Exactly the same way! Then you'll end up with several identical brushes, all with different spacing. The spacing settings will be saved along with the brush. Does that make sense? |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
OK ... this is what I did. Changed the spacing ... so now my current brush spacing is at 130% Then I opened a new document Stamped once with my brush on a transparent layer Did Edit>Define brush preset Closed CS and restarted Selected the "new brush" ... and spacing isn't at 130% anymore. I guess I'm doing something wrong but I haven't a clue what. Sorry to be a pain ![]() Wendy |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
Aha! That's the problem. When you define a brush preset in that way, Photoshop looks at the pixels and creates a standard brush based on the shape of what's in the layer. What you should do instead is adapt an existing brush (or create one from scratch), then set the spacing. Then choose New Brush Preset from the pop-up menu on the Brushes palette, and it will build it correctly for you. Remember, the new brush will always appear at the end of your brushes palette until you move it somewhere else. Hope this works - and makes sense! Steve |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
Maybe I'm just tired by now ... but I seem to have created a problem with all of my brushe sets. I changed some of the settings (Scattering etc) and now every brush set I have defaults to the same settings. How do I reset them?? Oh dear ... I am in a mess ![]() Wendy |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
You could always try Reset Brushes in the pop-up menu in the Brushes palette. This will replace all your brushes with the default set. But are you sure that's what you want to do? You'll lose all the brushes you've created that way! On the other hand, it may be just as well to begin again... Good luck Steve |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
I wish it were so simple .... It seems to have effected every brush set I have ... so when I do Reset Brushes. Each brush in there has the same settings too ... Wendy |

Re: Belated Christmas Tinsel
Hi Maiden ![]() New here to the forum, but I did your Tinsel Banner (which we call Tinsel Garland where I come from) and absolutely love this brush! Have been looking for something I can futz around with to make it look like fur around sleeve openings and such, and yours will work wonderfully for that. Thank you very much! ![]() |
