My first Photshop tutorial
Here is my first photoshop tutorial (click the link).

Tell me what you think (Yes, it is a big picture, because I don't want my own website)

Re: My first Photshop tutorial
Good idea, but I'm not sure about the end result.

If I were doing this, I think I'd first make a grey copy of the original, blow it up, then blur it - and then use Levels to tighten up the blurred version. This would give a smooth base: you could then place a very blurred copy of the original on top of this one to get the colour back.

Does that make sense?

Re: My first Photshop tutorial
Sort of, but do you mean doing that by lowering the opacity after you placed it on top? I admit i could make this look even better, but I was just suprised how well this worked on so many pictures. I was astonished to see I could get that much detail out of a 64x40 (not exact) image when blowing it up to 640 x 480, especially since it was orginally a sprite, and came out looking smoothed, sort of looking like mediocre CG.

I wouldn't mind seeing what you could do though Steve. Think you could show me exactly what you mean, or are you putting that in your book?

Ultros? Is that a PS filter I haven't heard of?

Somehow I suspect not...

Nope, but wouldn't that be funny. It's a video game character. Any chance on showing me what you mean completely about your technique, Steve?

Atomic, it's very similar in theory to the Unsharpen Mask tutorial in the 2nd edition (the man with his back to the camera).

Re: My first Photshop tutorial
OK, here's a quick go at my technique:

1. Original image, blown up to size. Why was yours so pixellated? Did you have bicubic interpolation turned off?

2. Duplicated, desaturated, blurred and brightened slightly.

3. Tightened up using Levels (same technique as neon lettering, p 110)

4. Original blurred, set to Multiply so it only shows through the white areas of step 3.

No manual retouching at all, so far! But note the hard, clean edges on the legs, body and teeth.

Re: My first Photshop tutorial
I think that works nicely, although I think my method would have worked the same way if I had bicubic interpolation turned on. I am not sure how it turned off, I usually always had it on. I will try out your method too, of course.

Re: My first Photshop tutorial
Ok, I made a new method and compared it with the rest of the methods we tried. I got this when experimenting with Steve's method, so kudos to Steve.

The tutorial on how to do it is here.

Atomic, good for you to do your first tutorial - I know you always welcome positive critisism on how to improve your work so listen up.
The typeface you have used in your tutorial is almost impossible to read, I'd be thinking of changing it, remember you want people to stay to read about your hard work, as it stands people may close the browser window before they've read it just on first impressions.

Ouch it hurt my eyes.

Are you talking about my new tutorial or my old one? if it is my new one I will fix it... Thanks for the comment Glen.
