Re: Light my fire
It's looking good BobbyJo. I'd say the fire might need some brightening up, increasing the saturation, adding some light yellow/white using the paint brush to the base of the flames and adding an ambient glow to the fire. The logs of your fire are uniformly quite dark in your picture although the glow of the fire would make them lighter where they weren't in shadow. Look at Steve's chapter on Light & Shade, page 104 "The romance of candlelight" to see how effective adding a glow can be. In fact "Shadows on the wall" page 94, "Shading with Dodge & Burn" page 106 and "Visible light sources" page 102 are also very appropriate to this challenge. I hope you don't mind my review, I do have to say you have made a very nice scene but the elements don't convincingly blend together because of the variations in highlights and shadows of each element, as I presume you are aiming for a night scene then the main source of light is the fire and all shading and highlights must stem from that source, so start at the fire and work outwards. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Light my fire
Thanks Becky. I was sort of after a twilight scene with a bit of mist. I used to do a bit of watercolour painting and I suppose this influences me regarding texture and colour so I couldn't make up my mind the best way to do it but your suggestions are the key. I'll give it another bash when I get some time and put them into action. (In between trying to figure out my new camera and the manual) Cheers ![]() _________________ BJ - Image Imaginator ![]() |

Re: Light my fire
That's a big improvement Bobbyjo definitely a sense of warmth and glow emanating from the fire now. The flames could do with a touch of blurring though but I like the misty atmosphere you've now created. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Light my fire
I gave the flames a smudge and blur and it does look beeter. Now for my next project involving an old church which was busted in the last war. I'm trying to make a spooky picture from it ![]()
