Re: what a brilliant site!
You're obviously having fun with Photoshop! I think in the elephant image, though, there's a bit of a problem with the tonal range: all the background's a uniform brown, but that elephant looks out of place. Perhaps try adding some brown to the elephant as well, to make it blend in more? And, since the boat has such a strong reflection, perhaps the elephant should as well… ![]() |

Re: what a brilliant site!
My wife, Sheila Rae, recently received many M & M candies printed with her name. This resulted from my photography and photoshop efforts which I thought I would send since this is about cheating in photoshop. Comments? ![]() |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Kevin, I was thinking of getting the book myself - I use Photoshop but I'm sure I don't use half of what it can do and I love nothing more than manipulating photos into weird and wonderful creations. What would you say is brilliant about the book? 20 quid seems a lot of money, relatively speaking, so just wondering... Thanks Atheana |

Re: what a brilliant site!
mguyer I think that's brilliant - again, I would ask how you did that? I'm still waiting to hear how Steve managed the reflection of the hephalump! |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Hi atheana Unfortunately, there is not (yet) a 'reflections' filter in Photoshop ! Fortunately, its really easy to achieve a realistic effect - especially with Steve's "Shiny Surfaces" chapter to guide you. Basically, you need to select the elephant, put it on a new layer, flip it upside down, and move it into position below the boat. Finally, lower the transparency of the duplicated layer until it looks right. You can even add a gradient layer mask, for extra realism. For a professional explanation -I strongly recommend you buy the book (as I have...3 times !) _________________ |

Re: what a brilliant site!
atheana, I took a picture of the candies, and a separate picture of my wife. selected my wife using mainly the pen tool except for her hair (which was done by creating a mask as a channel), then just moving things around and adding a crop shadow behind her. |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Cheers for that Paul - well, I well and truly 'cheated' on this one, whatchya reckon? Why on earth did you buy the book THREE times? lol I've decided as I enjoy using the program so much and there really is so much more I can do with it, to get the book and learn how to 'cheat' properly...lol ![]() |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Excellent tips there mgyyer, ta for that. I'm not sure what you mean by 'creating a mask as a channel' - but like I said, I still have a lot to learn about the program. Problem is I'm not a great one for reading manuals, prefer instead to trial by error. It's nice to see other like minded folk who enjoy having fun with Photoshop too. |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Paul, thanks for that - I've done as you suggested, the results below - this time NO cheating...lol What did you mean by adding a gradient layer mask for extra realism? Cheers Atheana ![]() |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Atheana I bought the book nearly 4 years ago, and since then Steve has fiendishly updated it twice - each time adding enough new material to warrant another 20 quid. The gradient on the layer mask allows you to make the reflection fade out, the further away from the object it is. As for 'manuals' - HTCIP isnt really that type of book - its more a series of self-contained snapshot tutorials that make common problems (such as adding realistic reflectons !) a piece of cake _________________ |

Re: what a brilliant site!
Ker-ching… and another copy sold! Thanks, Paul! Atheana, if you're not using layer masks, you're really missing out on the whole layer interaction/blending thing. It's the best way of hiding, rather than erasing, part of a layer - the advantage being that you can always reveal the hidden portion layer, or fine tune it. Adding a gradient to a layer mask will fade it away smoothly, just as if you'd erased the bottom half with a big, soft eraser. Except, of course, nothing is irretrievably erased! |
