A quick two page layout
Hi all,

my task today was to layout a 2page spread for my organization's magazine.

the objective: to put a hand bringing a hammer down on a pension document for an article about those pesky republicans and their plot to throw away defined benefit pensions in this country.

timeframe: given all the other layouts i have to do, i alloted myself about four hours for this one.

workflow: i found a hammer on a stockphoto site, i then photographed a co-worker's hand in several positions that i thought best suited the hammer perspective. then put the two together and added a few motion blurrs. next, i had to create a stack of papers labeled "pension agreement" and added distress to the stack. (i crumpled up a blank sheet of paper and scanned it then used it for a displacement map) then i added the headlines and dumped the whole thing into Quark Xpress to add the copy.

any thoughts/suggestions. i think this is a great forum and i plan on posting a lot of my layouts to get feedback/criticism. thanks!

Excellent, looks good to me. Although if I was to pick up on one slight thing is that you have chosen to use what appears to be a Left- Aligned text (correct me if I'm wrong as DTP isn't my thing) which creates a somewhat jagged right edge to each text column would it look better or worse if you had chosen a Justified text alignment with hyphenation to give a solid block of text with straight lines down both edges?

Otherwise the image is powerful and brings the reader directly to the issue at hand and very nicely implemented.

Thanks for the comments. I agree, I like justified text much better as a designer. However, my editor feels differently... ha! you will see, as i post other layouts that use photomontage, that all of my body copy will be flush left. one of those pesky rules that i am forced to follow.

Ah I see, well you can't argue with the Editor I suppose.

I wonder if Steve has come up against this kind of Editor versus Designer situation?

All the time! But in the end, you just have to give in and do what they want. Some arguments just aren't worth having.

Great illustration, and one which works really well on the layout.

I've got to admit that from a personal perspective I like justified text but hate to see hyphens - there was a time when automatic hyphenation in QuarkXpress was the bane of my life!

Yes I know what you mean too much hyphenation can lead to the text being virtually illegible but unless I'm wrong the amount of hyphenation can be controlled?

Or, indeed, turned off altogether.
