Re: Flood pic
I wouldn't say it was chilly I've not read any negative replies to what Paul said and he has raised some valid points if slightly misplaced.

I think people aren't fully reading all the replies and assuming that it's a flame war on the contrary it's quite a useful discussion about inspiration and whether beginners are being put off by more experienced entries.

Yes it can be intimidating if you feel that your own efforts don't match what already is posted but that isn't the point of the Challenge - it is an excercise in developing your own skills not a competition - Steve's appraisals at the end isn't to nominate the best of that week but to give each and everybody some guidance in how to create better montages and if people are being put-off then it's purpose is defeated.

Let's not turn the Challenge into a competition, please, this site is better than that and we don't need petty rivalries here.

BTW That's a lovely frozen scene Dalton, tremendous work.

Actually I had made this pic the day after my Friday Challenge pic ...mostly cuz my wife and young daughter thought a pic based on the film 'The Day After Tomorrow' would have been good... so I did it for them. I was about to post it on the Friday challenge page but when I logged on I seen all the comments and thought ... yikes!.. now wut do I do with this picture??? not wanting to appear insensitive or arrogant I thought it best not to post it as a Friday Challenge pic but take it to another part of the forum... which I have done.. the pun of me saying about it being chilly was only fun... sumthing I think sum of us forget this is all about at times.

I can understand how Paul feels... I have felt like that too when I've seen sum of the stuff on here..... but I read Steve's book... and try to figure out how things are done.. I am by no means a professional with Photoshop... and in fact all the montage pictures I've ever done are right here on this forum..... so I'm still very much learning.. and I never take the Friday Challenge as a challenge between others on here.... merely as a Challenge to myself. Photoshop is just a bit of fun for me to pass the time.... it's not my job... and I don't make money from anything I do with it... so there is absolutely no reason for anyone to feel intimadated by anything I do... to be honest I'm never that impressed by my own work.... and look forward to Fridays so Steve can point me in the right direction.

Anyways... I'm glad you liked the pic Maiden.... and thankyou for your comments and encouragement.... very much appreciated

Dalton

Outstanding work DaltonX!

Terrific detail, it must have taken hours. You are a creative powerhouse. You've created a lot of stunning work in a short time.

Re: Flood pic
Hi Dalton...great pic! Very good snow indeed. Interesting comment too, especially the bit where you say you didn't want to be insensitive or arrogant and decided not to post your picture. And that's just the thing that's starting to bug me a little.

Why should anyone have to hold back the skills he or she picked up through Steves book just because someone gets frustrated? . (Hey Paul, don't take this the wrong way, it's nothing personal).Everybody is only trying the best they can and of course there is always going to be a difference in "quality" ,whatever that means ....But that's the beauty of this forum. We can learn from each other. But when it comes to the point that anyone should feel like he's insulting anyone just because he made an image he's happy with...well...then there's no point anymore is there?

Re: Flood pic
And on that note I'm posting the image I didn't almost want to post for the reasons mentioned above. Just something I wanted to try as I liked the tornado pic so much and wanted to see if I could somehow get the London picture in there. And as I am on a "Day after Tomorrow "trip anyway this should complete the "series". I kept it fairly small to hide the mistakes

Re: Flood pic
Just one last point I'd like to make then I'll shut up! lol... at the beginning of Steve's new book it reads...."The Techniques described in this book assume you have a reasonable working knowledge of Photoshop..." This is one reason why I bought the book.... I didn't buy it as a beginner to Photoshop.... as I'm sure a lot of other's on this forum didn't either. Within a very short time... and because of Steve's excellent ability to descibe in easy to understand detail all the techniques... I have noticed my work improve in leaps and bounds... (wasn't that the point of the book?) I have to say that when I seen some of the comments on the Friday Challenge page this week.... I kinda thought.... wow!... is there a certain level that when attained from Steve's book... you have to leave this forum???... I am far from even half way through Steve's fascinating and compulsive book.... but, I've been almost afraid to read anymore of it incase I learn something from it that someone here thinks is just showing off or too good to be posted on this forum. My intentions are not to show off on this forum.. but to learn from the people already here and help out if I can.... I have been in awe of some of works of art I've seen posted here.... the likes of .....Neal.....Glen....Stefan.... Eggbox... Tom...Daz...some guy called Steve?!?!?!! .... and too many more to mention but you know who you are lol..... and it's people like them who push me to try my best to improve... not to feel dejected and want to give up. I don't feel that anyone is better than anyone else on here... just at different levels and all the work can still be appreciated by the more advanced and less advanced alike..... we all had to start somewhere... and some of us started long before others.... I just don't think we should be condemned for it. Like Steve said.... it's not a competition and there are no prizes at the end of it ...so what would be the point of trying to out-do anyone else on here?... I truely don't think that is the intention of anyone I've met so far on this forum.... in general they are all pleasent to everyone...and very, very helpful.

Anyway...enuff rambling from me.. just hadta get that off my chest lol..... phew!

Re: Flood pic
Dalton,Chris,Neal...thanks . Chris, the tornado is actually taken from an official poster for the "The day after tomorrow". I just painted in "London" which wasn't as daunting in the end as it seemed at first. I wish I had painted the tornados by hand. The day I reach that level I'll be a happy chap.

Yes Dalton, I fully agree with your comments and I'm happy I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Gotta do some work now......
