More Infra red
Went along to 'The Bluebell Line' yesterday to do some infrared work and this was one of the results

I like the images very much Gordon. Thanks for sharing. I just wonder what spectrum your IR covers. I'm only curious. It must be close to visible otherwise the engine boiler, pistons, would be really bright if you go deeper into inferred spectrum which is quite deep of course. Interesting.....

Got me thinking .....

Re: More Infra red
Hi Trevor,
Both of my cameras operate in the Near Infra Red range i.e. just beyond the visible and well before the heat range of infra red.
My Nikon D100 has been modified with a filter that operates in the 720nm transmission area. This creates a black and white image virtually straight out of the camera with a custom white balance based on living green foliage (e.g. grass). Although it is, essentially, a black and white image there is a limited colour capability and the Channel mixer can be used to obtain a blue sky, although not very saturated.

My Canon G12 has a filter that has transmissivity in the 590nm area. This operates into the infra red range but also will take in the red end of the spectrum up to orange. This allows for some interesting colour effects when using the Channel Mixer and also allows a lot of control over the black and white images when using a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer and a Black and White Adjustment Layer.

The steam train was shot on the Canon G12.

Re: More Infra red
Thanks again Gordon.

Perfect makes sense to me as I was thinking those sort of parameters were the case. Thanks very much for the details.

As side note: as I guess you know, if you want to go deeper into the infra-red e.g. for astronomy you need to start cooling or super cooling the sensor and associated parts e.g. to observe the universe and penetrate galaxies internal structure through the visible obscuring "gas clouds", otherwise "fogs" itself.

I find the electromagnet spectrum fascinating and have worked with it on several parts of it, even with my eyes . Its immutable, which is a comfort. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_spectrum

As Anna says keep them coming; when you can.

I agree, these type of images are fascinating as is the explanation of how they are achieved. Art meets Geek .... great!

Re: More Infra red
As we had the right weather for this today I popped down to Brighton this morning to get this shot which had been in my head for a while.

Re: More Infra red
The ferris wheel is beautiful Gordon..but what makes this image is the blue and white chairs. Stunning

Thank you Anna,

... and it was all done without using any selections; just hue/saturation and channel mixer.

I must say that I am enjoying using the converted Canon G12; it's certainly providing me with some superb images.

Re: More Infra red
Hi Gordon

Two more great images and good to see the 9F featured. Steam is my passion and I must go to the Bluebell sometime. The ferris wheel is composed beautifully and the popped colour makes this a really great piece of work.

Following our chat in London and seeing more of your IR work prompted me to revisit the Channel mixer Infra red technique. This was explained in one of the first books I bought - 'How to Wow by Jack Davis and Ben Willmore. They explain how to mix the channels, depending on the image make up.

I had a go on an image taken at Shuttleworth a couple of years ago. The Oldsmobile was surrounded by other cars and admirers, so I went back the following day and shot the empty field under similar lighting conditions and then placed the car into the new surroundings. Using the mixer I ticked monochrome and set blue to -170 and green to +170. The reds were altered slightly so the whole mix equalled 105. I merged the layers and applied a very small amount of diffused glow.

I'm no expert on this and the technical stuff written above is quite mind blowing, but it seems to me that the results are not miles apart and I would be reluctant to convert one of my cameras and lose the versatility, never mind the expense.

I would be interested to know what others think.

If you fancy a trip to the Bluebell sometime, give me a shout.

Nick

It's maybe not the same as infra red (no 'lighting up' of the green trees), but I find this B/W picture outstanding, being not an expert too. Actually, I don't see much difference between GKB's second post, the Brighton one and your Channel mixer one, exept for the blue chairs of course.

Re: More Infra red
Hi Nick and Sjef,

As Sjef says the main difference is with the foliage; living green foliage is a great reflector of infrared light, hence why trees and grass appear white in true infrared images but not in 'channel mixer' images. I suspect that the grass in the Oldsmobile image was rather brown and dry hence the light colour.

The blue of the deck chairs is possible because my Canon G12 has a filter that extends into the red end of the spectrum thus allowing colour to be manipulated; it isn't really possible to do this with a deep IR filter as only infra red is recorded.

Another technique is to have a black and white image with a blue (or any other colour) sky.

I'm on holiday in the north east of England at the moment and have taken a couple of shots of castles that I can post at the end of this week to illustrate this.

Re: More Infra red
Thanks Gordon
The CM approach works on some images better than others and it all depends on how light the foliage is.

You are right that the grass was a light yellow, hence the lightness. By contrast, the trees in the background were a very dark green, almost edging towards the black and these have not reacted well. I have attached another shot taken in Bedford, where the trees were lighter and this seems to have worked better.
