Oil painting in photoshop without oil paint filter
Despite the oil paint filter available in photoshop, I'm still not a huge fan of it use alone, and think the effect is to general across the image and doesn't give me that much scope for creativity,(Im using Cs6 not sure of CC) so I decided to create my own technique from various techniques I've seen. So here's my oil painting of Gandalf from lord of the rings.
I've tried to give the impression of thick pint on canvas with small bits of painted canvas showing through at points. Also some adjustments to the overall colour to help with the painted look, and some slight dodging and burning. What do you think?

Hi Simon,
That looks really excellent to me and certainly gives the impression of thick paint.
Great work

Yes, that's really good Simon. I like the way you have painted the eyes.

That is a really well realised technique, Simon, which has produced a convincing result.

I would also be very interested to see a tutorial on how you did it.

Re: Oil painting in photoshop without oil paint filter
I'll post one before the end of the week. I'm doing a picture for a friend in this style so will use it to take some screen shots of the various steps

Hi Chris

Simon posted it in the Tutorials section.

I'll have a look for a sunset for you but not sure I can help on that one.

Excellent skill and judgement - I find all the "arty" filters are problematic
