Family history Photo book

I undertook the mammoth task of sorting through boxes and suitcases filled with old photos, letters and documents relating to the family that I have gathered and collected, over the past 40 years or so, from various family members.

I scanned what ever I could. If it was too large, photographed it. Cut everything out in Photoshop, added textures and created several photo books with everything I had.

Joined Ancestry.com and was able to download a lot more information and documents which filled in some of the gaps. It took several months of research and pages of mind maps and notes but eventually it all came together.

Initially, it was just a hobby but then I realised future generations wouldn't have a clue as to who everyone is and all those precious photos and information would be lost.

I wanted to breathe life into all the people of the past, give them an identity and tell their story for my children, grandchildren and anyone else that follows after them.

This is a sample of one of the pages.

I ended up doing a video of the book also and set it to music.

It's wonderful Anna, what a lot of work... your choice of the typewriter font makes it work extremely well for me...

I cannot begin to imagine how much work has gone into this. Not so much the movie as the research. It's marvellous.

I love the typewriter typeface it's perfect for it. The only problem is that it makes me want to hold the 'real' book in my hands and read from it.

The mixed page backgrounds take me back to my childhood in the post war years of shortage and rationing when things were in short supply. We made scrap books from cut out pictures, photos, pressed flowers, whatever we could find and glued them into books made from old brown wrapping paper, the thick coarse grey paper that went under the carpet to stop draughts from between the floor boards, sheets of thin card and even stiff fabric. All bound together with string or those old fashioned brass paper clips that had 'legs' that you bent outwards.

What a wonderful thing to leave your children and theirs ...........

I see Loyd just beat me to it while I was typing. Seems we both agree on the font.

Re: Family history Photo book
Thank you Loyd and David.

Everyone, so far, in the family seems to be quite pleased with it.

It was fascinating being able to go back in time and try and walk in their footsteps by imagining what life would have been like by studying their photos and what they wore. Looking at their handwriting. Seeing where they lived. It all forms a picture.

I was intrigued learning about Workhouses. I had no idea what they were until I started researching them. They were definitely very harsh and inhumane times.

One of the books that I am reading at the moment tells of Charlie Chaplin and his experiences growing up in a Workhouse.

David, one of the photo albums that I used looks, more or less, how you describe!

Re: Family history Photo book
Amazing work Anna, I have been doing similar things, but not as elaborate as yours. Have only done 1 book so far, a copy of an old album of Peter's fathers, of photos he took in the 30s. Leaving Denmark going to America on to Australia and then back to Denmark (to find a bride).
The photos were all quite small and faded, no captions, so it took some time to get them cleaned up and finding out where they were taken. Managed to place quite a few with the help of https://smallseotools.com/reverse-image-search/
I found Yandex better than Google and Bing.

That is really beautiful, Vibeke. It's a wonderful keepsake.

I know the size of the images you are talking about as I have hundreds of them and they are really difficult to work with.

And now you have also given me an idea on what to do with some of mine. The majority of them are various sites also from around the world. Some I recognise but others - not a clue. Never thought of reverse image search! Brilliant.

I've just tested it and its fantastic. It's worked out that this building is in Glenelg, South Australia! And look at the palm trees and how they have grown over the past 70 years or so. Thank you for this tip. I know what I'll be doing over the next few weeks.

Out of interest, does Peter remember what type of camera his dad used?

Thanks Anna, So happy I could be of some help. Peter wouldn't know what camera his dad had, I don't think he had even seen the album until quite recently.
