My latest.
This was for a contest on Freakingnews, after spending far to much time, looking for the right image on the DVD, I gave up and used my own hand - yes, I am Spiderman!

I cloned/healed away the nails and some of the lines, overlayed a red hand layer and another for the burlap texture. I added one final layer for the 'webbing' and used a layer style, hand drawing the lines (I started off with beziers but found it tedious). I grabbed a frame for the backgound from the DVD and added a little radial (zoom) blur. I finally knocked up the wrist display and played with the overall lighting.

Absolutely stunning! That zoom blur reallly gives a sense of dynamism to the background, and the webbing on the hand works amazingly well. I know what you mean about Bézier curves - sometimes they're just too much hassle. Every time I get asked to draw someone in striped pyjamas (more often than you might think) I begin with Béziers and end up using a hard brush in QuickMask.

And is that Plastic Wrap I can spot on the error message? A fabulously useful filter, I'm sure you'll agree! And all your effort on the hand was well worth it - looks exactly like a glove. Spot on.

Has the contest finished? Did you win?

Thanks Steve. Surprisingly, I didn't use Plastic wrap on the screen, just some splashes of white on a semi-translucent layer, the bezel was 'metalled' using your curves method.

The contest is still running and I'm currently 3rd out of 16, with 20 hours of voting to go, so anything can happen.

Looks great to me Trinity. The webbing on the glove looks fantastic, must have taken you hours to get the right effect. The zoom blur also adds a great deal to the image. Do you think it might add more to the image if you somehow drew a web being shot out from the hand?

Great work

Re: My latest.
This may be a stupid comment - but since you went to all the trouble of photographing your own hand, why didn't you just put a glove on?

It's not a stupid question, I don't have any gloves and it was also an 'OK, I can make this with minimal props' moment.

Thanks Ryan. The lack of web is intentional, it's part of the visual, due to the web-server error. I did consider having a little bit spitting out but thought it superfluous to the image.

Re: My latest.
...wow.

I feel like there's something weird with that fabric, though, and the webbing looks like it's not attached to the hand in certain places (where it doesn't fit the hand's contours exactly, near the lower left corner of the hand).

Don't get me wrong, though. It's amazing.
