Re: remove distracting background
Great job, mguyer. You isolated the child and closed the doors nicely. A couple of things I might do though would be to add a slightvshadow behind the child and possibly make the highlight on the door less apparent. My quick attempt is what you see here. I made a layer copy of the isolated child, then ctrl-clicked on the original layer and filled the selection with black, added some blur, lowered the opacity and finally burned the highlight a little bit. All to my own taste. But I'm surprised I don't see you anywhere in the picture! ![]() _________________ It must be a clipping mask, I never could get the hang of clipping masks |

Re: remove distracting background
What you've done works well, Marty - and Whaler's shadow is a good addition, although given the position of the flash (on the camera) the shadow should be the other side. A couple of problems with the door, though. First, they're far too small - with a handle way down there, only a child could reach it! And secondly, they need more perspective to be convincing. Here's a quick alteration: ![]() |

Re: remove distracting background
Whaler: Thanks for your suggestions. Actually I did do a shadow although more diffuse which doesn't show up up here. I am in the picture peerring through the crack between the doors. Steve: As soon as I hit SEND I realized the the door knob is too low. Now I will need to buy new adult size doors. Back to the drawing board...or rather computer. |

Re: remove distracting background
I guess the shadow could go on either side of the child. It all depends on where your flash sits on your camera. In the original (landscape) picture it looks like the flash is in the same plane as the lens and on the same axis and therefore leaves no shadow at all. When I use my own camera in landscape format, but when I tilt it for portrait format I always end up with the shadow to the left and that's why I put the shadow there in my modification. _________________ It must be a clipping mask, I never could get the hang of clipping masks |

Great work Marty.. looks convincing ....you also did a magnificent job of cutting the child out of the original... the child's mum should be delighted with your result.... bravo! ![]() _________________ DaltonX |

Re: remove distracting background
That's much better, Marty. But I still have a problem with the angle of the doors: we appear to be at eye level with the child, but the way the doors are sloping up suggests we're way above. Look at my mockup again, and you'll see how raising the left side of the doors will really help this. |

Re: remove distracting background
Thanks. I was concentrating on the bottom edges of the doors and keeping them parallel with the baseboards and the edge of the carpeting. Do you ever work on a project and start to feel I have done all I am going to do on this one? This one really took some thinking. I started by photographing doors in my own house. After I got them into place the door knobs were all messed up so I went back and photographed door knobs to use in the composite. |

Re: remove distracting background
...and as far as looking for Marty somewhere... the kid kinda looks like you... ![]() By the way I would have the shadows go kind of more downward, meaning less shadow over the head, arms, etc and more parallel, right to left. For the light to send shadow higher then the subject, the light source has to be lower then the subject... _________________ |
