Re: Still Life and Street inpired by M C Escher
Seems you've got the bug Ben!

This is beautifully done, but I have one small suggestion. To me the table top extending outside to become the street lacks conviction. I think it would be much stronger if you brought the street inside. Give it a street surface texture, cobbles would be typically Venice, and extend this forward under the cups. A recognisable texture would also have a much stronger perspective than the the present flat surface. My personal instinct is that you could bring this right up to the table edge. If that doesn't work you could maybe transform the the texture in the foreground to another similar texture, something like a deeply grained leather desktop or a coarsely woven table cloth. I think also a change of light on the surface starting a little lighter in in the distance getting darker in the foreground and letting some of the brighter foreground objects be a little darker would also give added depth and strengthen the illusion.

I will tell you quite frankly I am only guessing here. My comments may be quite invalid. I quite deliberately have not looked at or referred back to the Escher original to see how he handled it as I want my reaction to be an honest instinctive reaction to your image.

I'll be curious to hear what Steve has to say here.

What I can tell you is that one of the tougher discoveries I made from hard experience is that illusions in photography can be much more demanding than drawn or painted illusions. The viewer will accept much more ellipsis and ambiguity in a graphic work because it doesn't have to be 'real'. A photographic illusion, on the other hand, only works if, however impossible, it really looks real.

Lovely work Ben.

A quick update, these cobbles are from the original image. I think it does work better David.

Yes chair is a good idea. It's totally subjective but I do think both these are an improvement. The slightly wet look of the street is particularly good.

I agree - its a better image, thank you for your input David.

You are certainly right about the degree of difficulty doing illusions - I've started on Belvedere a few times & put it aside.

Steve had commented - I love the camaraderie and cooperation of the Forum, the way everyone encourages each other rather than seeing it as a competition.

I certainly enjoy the discussions. Thanks David.

Belvedere is a tough one! It's composed of a number of superposed elements, each of which is a legitimate perspective in itself, joined in an illegitimate manner. If I am going to attempt something like that I create the legitimate parts in 3D and import them to photoshop layers and create all the trickery and illegitimate joins there.

You could simply import the entire Escher image to a layer and use it as a guide for the construction of your own. It's sort of cheating .... but not quite.

A very fine image, Ben, and I agree with David’s suggestion of bringing the street onto the table.

The one thing that jumps out at me is the disparity between the angle of the books, particularly on the left, and the face of the building behind. Would it make sense to adjust the building to match the books? Not the whole street, just that face.

Steve's eagle eye has, as ever, spotted a small detail whose correction is a big improvement. This image has come a long way from your first posting.

A huge YES to that. I have learned so much here both directly from comments and suggestions on my own work and indirectly by comments and suggestions to other people's work. We all have our own styles and the variety can sometimes produce wonderfully unexpected results.

If I look back over the years I see can visible improvements in so many of the contributors, myself included.

That Steve is prepared to devote some time and attention to our small group of enthusiasts, most of whom have seen more than a few summers, is something for we owe a great deal of thanks.

I do love it here!
