My giant mega image is finally finished!!
I mentioned a couple of weeks back that I would be missing a couple of challenges because I wanted to finish the huge image I had been working for Ingrid. Well it's finally finished! It represents a little over two years of on/off work, change and development. The version posted here is a reduced size version but you will be able zoom in enough to get a good idea of the level of detail. The original is 14000 x 8000 pixels which enables a very large size print that one can get really close up to and enjoy the little details. I am afraid that I have had to watermark it - no reflection on your good selves who I would far prefer to see it clean. Sadly far too much of my work has been pirated for me to post it this size in a public forum without watermarks. For those of you who like the statistical stuff it has (in round figures) 1120 layers within which smart layers contain a further 475 layers. Given that each layer is 112 MegaPixels that's a lot of image for my poor machine to handle. The PSB disc file weighs in at 14GB. I have an M2 Max Mac studio with enhanced GPU and 64 GB RAM. Even with this I have to turn off half to two thirds of my layers and work on segments to prevent too much slow down on some of the tools and adjustments. The layer structure is quite specifically designed to allow this to be done in a way that means that at any one time I am working on a coherent and meaningful segment of the image. So what's it about? You tell me what you think ................. There are three different worlds or times each rotated 90° relative to each other. They are night, day and morning/evening. The night time world, although the architecture is classical, is peopled by modern characters, presumably tourists, who are busy photographing the other two worlds (if you look carefully you will find one who is photographing you the spectator). The daytime world is quite evidently mediaeval while the third world is in an ecclesiastical setting which is basically timeless. Although each segment is distinct there are parts where they intersect and penetrate one another seemingly randomly. Clearly the tourists with all their cameras are fully aware of the other two worlds or times, but are the subjects of their attention aware of being observed and recorded? They seem not to be. Are these really different times with time travelling tourists or is this some kind of fantastical theme park with costumed actors there for the tourists benefit? This is an image you are absolutely free to fantasise and interpret in your own manner. It started off black and white but over time has become a fairly muted colour. We both felt this helped give each of the three 'worlds' its own character. Hope you like. I really enjoyed creating it. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Incredible! What an amazing image! Well, if anyone was going to rebuild Notre Dame, you're probably the best candidate. |

David, this must constitute your finest work. What now? Is it going to gather dust never to see the light of day. |

David, amazing work,I believe the guy photographing us is that fellow in the red shirt. I'm afraid I would get lost attempting something like that. You're stepping into the realm of Bert Monroy's "Times Square" Really nice and truly incredible. |

Re: My giant mega image is finally finished!!
Sorry to be so late replying. I have been somewhat pre-occupied with all sorts of 'stuff'. Glad you all liked it. It was a huge amount of work but very enjoyable and rewarding. Quite aside from the Photoshop work there was a huge amount of 3D work (Trimble Sketchup) creating the basic structures. These were rendered to Photoshop layers as just basic shapes and all the textures, finishes and lighting done in Photoshop. Michael it will be printed large 150 x 80 centimetres and mounted for hanging by very high quality professional photo printers here and will hang in our home. Frank ... Yes .... the red shirt. I don't want to step into Monroy's shoes. I suspect this is the largest I will ever attempt. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David! I'm stunned. It's exquisite. I reckon Ravensburger would seriously consider this for a jigsaw puzzle. I'd buy it, even if it was 5000 pieces. Well done. _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Thanks Anna. I thought it might appeal to you. A jigsaw! By chance I stumbled across the world jigsaw championships on the web and watched a little bit. I have never seen anything so fast! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

A magnificent piece of work David, and to think I have trouble when layers get around 100. I am inspired but at the moment looking at a blank screen. Thank you for sharing. It is sad about the pirating. A fellow photo shopper here had most of his work copied by a Chinese company. |

Re: My giant mega image is finally finished!!
Thanks Ben. Large numbers of layers can get intimidating. On complicated images with high layer counts I discipline myself to be very rigorous in grouping and labelling layers in a meaningful manner. It's a bit tedious and it's easy to skip, but on a large image where you come back to it after periods away it is well worth the trouble otherwise you can get completely lost. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Amazing David, after it's on the wall you need to share a photo of it mounted and in all it's glory... |

This is really incredible, David! Intriguing concept and consummate execution. (I realize I'm late to the party but couldn't let this pass—it's really extraordinary!) |

Thanks Tom. It's the kind of thing an elderly bloke can do when retirement gives him time on his hands. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
