Re: It's done!
Yes on the first count, Glen. Both this and the previous edition were done in InDesign. It's far, far better than Quark for this kind of thing, much more tightly integrated with Photoshop. I work entirely in RGB, using native Photoshop files, and all the CMYK conversion is done at the end, when InDesign creates the final PDF files. Plus, of course, there's the transparency thing, which is what allows me to overlay shadows (such as those beneath the CD icons) on top of Hot Tips, to give just one example. InDesign CS2 came too late for this edition - which is a real shame, because it has this great feature whereby you can import a multi-layered PS doc, and choose which layers are displayed for each instance of it on the page. In theory, that means all the steps in my tutorials could be contained within a single PS file, which would be a really interesting and economical way of working. I've always hated Quark, it just seems to pig-headed. I used to use the Rule Above feature to create a WOB subhead, with the text reversed out of a thick rule, and Quark would frequently come back at me with things like "you can't use weight greater than 13.782pt with an offset of -1mm", or some such tosh. I mean, why the hell not? Which idiotic programmer came up with these arbitrary limits? But the main issue was the fact that any colours created in, say Illustrator or PS, looked completely different on the page to the same CMYK or Pantones built in Quark. Sorry for the rant! But InDesign really is much better! As for the second issue - by a strange quirk of planning I'm going to be on holiday on the date the third edition comes out, so not only would I not be present for any launch party, you'll get to see it before I do! And booksignings? I think you have to be Dan Brown or JK Rowling to get one of those… |

I've been a Quark man since version 3.1 came out. I tried InDesign 1.0 and hated it. It was a joke. Is the CS2 version that fantastic? Steve, you sit very comfortably on the bookshelf along side Dan Brown and JK Rowling. Is there a movie deal? |

Well thats kinda swayed me a bit more. But isn't Quark still the industry standard ? As for the movie, I think Dustin Hoffman would be perfect for the part. (Forget Hugh Grant) _________________ minds are like parachutes - they only work when they are open |
