Colour Wheel
Another thought I just had: a page or 2 of exposition on the concept of the Colour Wheel would be really useful.

In the Curves colour correction chapter, Steve talks about removing Greenish tints by adding red.

This would make little sense if you didnt understand the concept of complementary colours.

Re: Colour Wheel
That's a very valid point Paul.

Red to Fix a Cyan (Bluish/Green) Cast
Blue to Fix a Yellow Cast
Green to fix a Magenta (Redish/Blue) Cast

and vice versa. This certainly would be helpful for those would haven't done Photographic Printing using a colour enlarger.

Re: Colour Wheel
Um. Interesting. I have done a spread about colour in the next edition, more about the difference between RGB and CMYK, really. Perhaps I could work some colour wheel stuff in there.

Re: Colour Wheel
Yes please, cos I don't even understand the posts.....sigh

I am learning what the words mean at the same time as I am learning the program. It's like a foreign language. In fact David's nice clear explanation of "translation" in the Friday Challenge dispirited me so much I went off to play with 'Fireworks'

Re: Colour Wheel
Well in simplified terms, Eventer. When you have a 'cast' on your image it means a dominant colour that makes the other colours look off. If you have a Yellow cast the image appears tinted yellow and all the other natural colours will be tinted as per the colour cast.

In order to correct a colour cast you need to add a cast of the complimentary colour which neutralises that colour cast. i.e. With a Blue colour cast where your image appears to be too blue you increase the levels of Yellow and that neutralises the Blue and brings the other colours back to their normal state.

It's usually not as simple as just adding Yellow to counteract Blue in real life though, as it may be a greenish blue or a redish blue so you need to balance each cast with it's complimentary colour this is what the "Image/Adjustments/Color Balance..." filter is for which allows you to judge by eye the colour correction needed.

Re: Colour Wheel
I would be suprised if someone who bought Photoshop didn't know what the color wheel was... Maybe it isn't that well know in Britain? I'd say if people need help with the color wheel then you should include a link to a website to help them out, like this simplistic take on things http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/TEACH/floral/color.htm

Re: Colour Wheel
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I fear there are probably more of us skulking around than you care to know about and I can't pretend to be in Britain, I am Canadian.

In my own defense...I meet lots of people who want to ride and don't know a navicular from a kimberwick... I bet there are lots of happy little PSers like myself who blithely wander along (until they find THE book) not knowing a colour wheel from a sepia tone.

Gosh....I suddenly thought....I sincerely hope I am not the only one!
Eeek, I just took it for granted there were dozens of us.
