Where did I go wrong?
OK everyone, it's the final push now - the third edition is nearly finished and I'm asking for your help again.

If I've made any glaring errors, or if there's anything that's not as clear as it should be, please let me know! Even if you've pointed stuff out before, I'd be really grateful if you could do so again so i can make sure nothing slips through the net.

Thanks

Steve

Re: Where did I go wrong?
well, I never really understood the purpose of step 3 in "getting the glazing bug" p.161

p. 185 "metal with lighting effects" looks VERY unrealistic

I'm not really sure whats happening on p. 187 "more on lighting effects", although the texture looks pretty good.

p. 195 "photographing shiny objects, is the most realistic image in the book, I think, but i'd really like a page or 2 on how to do that with spherical or flat objects.

in "enter the terminator" p.279, there is far to much blood, I'd leave out, or at least tone down, steps 8-10. there should also be some sort of a shadow/reflection of the skin edges on the metal

in general try to get rights to put some more of the pictures you've done on the cd

can you also include some of your action (script) files, a .psd of your cover, and some workarounds for people using elements

that's all I can think of for now

Re: Where did I go wrong?
I got lost in the People and Cars demonstration. Step 7 describes adding a layer behind the car and stroking white in the windows, but how do you get the white reflections on the driver if the layer is behind the car?

Movies on the CD are a great help. They help me understand your directions better. I'm a slow reader and big words scare me. Your calm and soothing voice on the videos guide me through your demonstrations. Will there be a lot of video instructions on the CD?

Will I be able to follow the third edition, even though I use Photoshop 5.0? I don't like the fancy tools in the newer versions. I stick with the basic and simple tools. (I also use Adobe Dimensions, I'm such a dinosaur.)

Re: Where did I go wrong?
Hi Steve

When I first worked through your book, I did notice lots of small errors. On seeing your request, I’ve had another look this evening (managed about one third of the pages), noting stuff ranging from the pernickety to the extremely pernickety!

If this stuff is useful to you, I’ll gladly scour the rest of the book in a similarly anal fashion !

OK, here goes:

Page 10 – Change brushes in PC by using [ and ] = NOT Ctrl+[ and Ctrl + ]

Page 32 – Group layers Ctrl+ G NOT Ctrl + SHIFT + G (this is the shortcut for UNGROUPING)

Page 36 – On CD, Sea and sky come already merged, so cannot create mask !

Page 55 Channels – Ctrl + ~ is shortcut for RGB, NOT Ctrl + ‘ (on PC that is shortcut for ‘show grid’)

Page 58 MINI – paths on CD don’t match car ! – esp the Union Jack

Page 63, “Putting Unsharp Mask into practice”, panel 3 - Threshold – 30 LEVELS, NOT 30 % !

Page 85 – John Prescott appears then disappears between panels 8 and 9!

Page 107 “Hot Tip” ALT key toggles Dodge and Burn tools NOT CTRL

Page 111 Panel 5 - SELECT > Modify > Contract Not EDIT> Modify> Contract

Page 113 Panel 8 - Free Transform is Ctrl+T Not Ctrl + Shift + T (on PC, this is shortcut for Transform AGAIN)

Page 131 – Bush’s hair is already smudged in all photos before reaching this step in panel 5. Also background layer is missing from CD as in previous example (on pg 129) but not sure if this is intentional

135 No Photo of Charlie –so “Case Study” icon missing from top right

Page 181 –“draw the same curve as we used in the in previous page” – but on cd, curve in adjustment layer has just 2 peaks, not 3 (is this cavilling getting ridiculous ?!)

General: The appended notes are a pain (Adobe’s fault for making this tool so unwieldy !)

On the Pdf you kindly supplied this forum showing the correct way to reflect that camera – you missed out the small semi-circular part of the lens frame in the final reflected image

Definitely agree with Neal – People In Cars is not as clear as the other tutorials.

Cheers

ps - I still LOVE the book !!!

Re: Where did I go wrong?
This is great - just what's needed. To answer a few specifics:

Einstein D Kid: It's the idea of lighting effects that I really like! It stays. And p 187 shows how different textures/blurs affect the finished image. And as for getting images on the CD - there's simply no possibility whatever of me being allowed to put 'real' people on there, sorry! Actions, now there's an interesting idea. I'll see if they make sense to anyone else.

Neal: The driver is also behind the car! But I'll make this clearer in the text. Haven't started the movies yet, but I hope to do more for this edition. But you have PS 5? Really? I'm amazed! Yes, most of the new stuff will work with 5 as well.

Paul McFadden: This is exactly, precisely what I need! I knew I'd get some PC shortcut stuff wrong (I was only guessing) but many, many thanks for pointing all this out. All your comments here are highly valued. If you can be bothered, please do keep going through the book.

All: The John Prescott tutorial has gone altogether, as has Enter the Terminator. (And Zombie Pensioners form Hell is a much better replacement.) There's over 100 pages of new material in this edition, and the publishers would only give me 64 physical pages, so a lot of stuff that I thought wasn't pulling its weight (no pun intended re Prescott) has had to go.

More, people! Bring it on!

Well, that's my aspirations of being a professional proof-reader out of the window! I hadn't spotted anywhere near that many.

Kid, John Prescott is the UK deputy Prime Minister, famous for jumbling his words and punching protestors ! Look behind the glass door in panels 8 and 9. Perhaps he was just passing by !

For the extra stuff - what about a "Bonus ! Extra Tutorials on the CD in pdf format ? !"

Zombie Pensioners From Hell sounds ace!

Now that's a good idea, like an archive of past articles.

Gosh, I have been working right along in the belief that "The Book" was nothing short of perfect. This has been a terrible shock to find out otherwise. I need to go and sit down to recover.......... AND I MIGHT AS WELL LOAD MY CS2 THAT JUST ARRIVED IN THE MAIL

Yes, that's an idea that's already been mentioned. Seems like a good one to me! If I can only track down all those deleted pages…

Re: Where did I go wrong?
hey, I just remembered one,
on p.7 "lasso and magic wand", and other places scattered through the book, you say to use the lasso tool with alt (\_-) to make straight lines, really all that does is imitate the polyganal lasso, so why not use that instead, (or at least mention that that is all it is doing

The reason I recommend opt/alt instead is that then you can use the regular Lasso within the same select session, simply by letting go of the key. But you're right, I should point out that this is replicating the polygonal lasso.

Re: Where did I go wrong?
on p. 239 file (building boxes)
you forgot to add the plastic toy and spout to the file (or instruct us how to make them in detail)

Re: Where did I go wrong?
your 3d transform tutorials are great but you need to mention that it has been removed directly from cs,cs2 (I thinks its supposed to be on the install cd?)

Re: Where did I go wrong?
I love p. 43 and I think i would be a great chance to try a bunch of stuff learnt earlier, especially if it was rejected, then youshould have full rights to it
