Displacemnet Maps
On page 300 we have displacement maps which looks really cool. Has anyone experimented with this yet ? It looks like a good way of carving a name into a wall, tree or other textured surface. I wonder if we could do our own Mount Rushmore using this. Has anyone any pickies using this technique ? _________________ BJ - Image Imaginator |

I always thought this was pretty cool. You can use it to create Predator style 'thermoptic' invisibility, which kinda refracts and distorts the light in the background. http://dawnofdesign.info/dod_tut_tcm.htm Other than that I've never used it |

Re: Displacemnet Maps
I've done a few Mount Rushmores, and they're really, really tricky to get right. Main problem is making photos of people look like they're made of sunlit stone. Don't really think displacement maps would help with this one, though - but they're great to mess around with! |

Here's an image I did a few weeks ago for the Readers Digest magazine. I tried all sorts of filters on the text - Wave, Ripple, Zigzag, etc - before hitting on the idea of using the sea itself as a Displacement Map. Worked well for me! Of course, I had to treat the small text differently - the same size of ripple would have made it illegible. |

Re: Displacemnet Maps
Here's a cool trick with displacement maps, instead if using a grayscale map, create a two color map. The grayscale moves pixels up and left, or the opposite direction depending on the settings and color value. But a 2-color map moves pixels in all 4 directions at the same time. Take the color image that will be your displacement map, and don't make it grayscale. Open the channels palette and click on the Blue Channel. Blue is not used to move pixels, so fill it with white. Take either the Red Channel or Green Channel and invert it (you know, make white pixels black and black pixels white, and so on). Click the RGB Channel and look at your funky colored image, blur it a little and save it as a Photoshop file. Use it like any ol' displacement map. The displacement is more 3-D. Experiment with moving the Red Channel up and left, and the Green Channel down and right. |

Hi,Neal! That sounds really cool!I'm an Elements user, but I do have PS7 as well. How do you fill a channel with white? Is this something you can do in Elements? Could you post a picture,so that I can seehow it turns out? _________________ Dogs have masters;Cats have staff. |

Re: Displacemnet Maps
Raffy, As far as displacement maps go, you don't have to fill the Blue channel with anything. It is ignored. Only the Red and Green channels will be used in a displacement map in RGB mode. Incidently, Grayscale displacement maps can two channel also. Simply add an Alpha channel for the second channel. Elements does not provide a channels palette. that makes working with channels in Elements awkward but not impossible. You can perform separations using standard builtin Elements functionality. But, it's tedious. Since you have PS7, use that for channel manipulations. It's much easier. If you do want to stay in Elements, there are free tool addins that you can download that will give you access to some channels functionality and other things.
