Contest 23: The horror of the blank page
A few weeks ago there was some discussion about doing a real-life job as a Friday Challenge, so I thought we'd give it a go this week.

This was a commission I got from the Independent newspaper earlier this year, for the cover of their Review section. The story is the scandal of supermarket chains buying up school playing fields in order to turn them into new stores.

All you get from me this week is a blank page to the right proportions: you'll have to google everything else yourself. If there's anything specific you're looking for that you really can't find, send me a private message here and I'll see if I've got it.

The important thing, of course, is the idea; you need to convey the theme as succinctly as you can. Remember to leave a space for the headline! I'll post my attempt at this one next Friday.

the comic font is free from http://www.blambot.com/ a great source of free comic art fonts.

As for the kid jumping it was simply a case of creating a shadow that came a little below the base of the sack, if the shadow had met the base of the sack the kid would have looked like he was on the floor as is the case with the other two.

He wasn't on that floor I cut and pasted him into the supermarket so I could position the kid, his shadow and reflection as I wanted. I opted to make him jumping because it adds a sense of action into the scene.

very cool. I am sure this is quite a beginner question, but how to I go about moving an object freely across the image as you did with the kids. I am having trouble getting it to move freely.

The most fustrating thing about this challenge is that I can visualise exactly what I want to produce. However there is a skills shortage between brain and ability to produce it! DAMN!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'move freely'. Using the pen tool I created paths around the kids in the original sack race picture and then made a selection from the paths and copied the kids to new layers above the supermarket picture. But I'm afraid, bottledregrets, if you're having problems undertsanding layers and masks then you really do need Steve's book, because subjects likes, the Pen Tool, Selections, Perspective Shadows and Reflections are just going to be way over your head. And I don't want to sound patronising, because these are skills that can be learnt easily enough, but it seems you have a little way to go yet.

Have a look at my tutorial on Selections and see if that makes any sense to you.

then have a look at my tutorial on layers and masks

work through them slowly and at your own pace and then hopefully all your questions will be answered.

Becky

I know exactly what you mean. That's why I took up photomontage in the first place - I couldn't get a pencil to say what I wanted!

I'm sure my pencils were previously owned by a dyslexic angler, every time I tried anything it ended up being carp.

Hey becky, thanks for the tutorials. I am talking about taking an image after selected by lasso or pen and moving out of the picture or moving it to somewhere else in the same picture such as the can in the microwave one

Haha or has they say on b3ta "badum tish!"

I love my pencils, I have about 5 boxes of 12, plus inks, paints, charcoal sticks, oil crayons, pastels, fine tipped ink pens, and watercolour pencils. I started out studying art and then became digital, although I could never claim to be a great artist I can turn my hand to create a nice image as and when the mood takes me.

Once you have made your selection Ctrl+J will copy it to a new layer, then go back to your original layer and use the Clone Tool and/or Healing Brush Tool to remove the figure by cloning the surrounding background (That's easier said than done and require some practice to make it look perfect).

But once you've cloned the figure out of the background, you can then reposition your figure (the one in the copied layer) anywhere that fits the background image.

But bottledregrets this really isn't the place to be discussing techniques as this forum is for the Friday Challenge entries and you do ask an awful lot of questions. Look around on the net it's choc-a-block with Photoshop tutorials ranging from the basics (which really is your level) to more advanced techniques.

It's not so much the amount of questions but where you ask them. You should really be using the Problems & Solutions section where I would glady answer any questions you have, but I feel answering questions here is taking up space where people's entries would be.

Becky .. Did you know that you have a Flash timeline screenshot in the new layer part of your tutorial on layers and masks ?!

Someone new to Photoshop may find this confusing.

Just thought I would point that out

Paul.
