Contest 24: John-BoB's challenge
This is one that John-BoB posted the other day, and I've hijacked it as I thought it would make a good contest. What he wants is for you to peel back the skin, and have a beam of light shooting out of the head. Well, for our purposes let's say the beam of light is optional, but can you peel the skin back? And what would you find underneath?

High res is here.

I know this is not that good but I have had to snatch some time before going to the Wifes work Christmas Party not been able to do one for a couple of weeks. I thought the stereotypical male brain might work here !

Welcome Neal and a great entry. Great shading which gives a real sense of depth. And Chris what a fantastic idea, it may be a stereotype but from my experience all too true. Haha Only joking.

Heres a very literal image... I sometimes wonder whether my stuff is always so straight, that I spend far too long making it look too realistic. Maybe I should get a little lateral

Perhaps the caption to this image should be "The truth is in there"?

Re: Contest 24: John-BoB's challenge
Morning all. Sorry I'm a little late rounding up this week, I went to a Christmas party last night and find myself strangely befuddled this morning.

This was a good one! Some really imaginative entries. Maiden, you've had a haircut. Aside from that, the folding-back of the skin looks great - love the texture on the inside. And the brain is well drawn, too, great texture again. My primitive knowledge of anatomy leads me to believe there should be a skull in there somewhere, but what the hell - artistic licence, and all.

Yes, Chris Pucci, you've probably got that spot on. Like the way the elements are coming out of the head towards us. The footie pitch looks a little glued-on, rather than inset: a bit of shading would have helped enormously here, around the back edge of the hole.

A really convincing entry from Neal, with the neatest hole yet. The way those flaps are folded back is just perfect, and I really like the fact that the brain is floating in so much empty space. Is that a rubber band ball? Really good work, Neal, come back again!

A nice volcanic eruption from African, with some good cracks and a strong sense of light beaming out. Nice technique in the beams, but I'm not entirely sure about the dark spot the front ones are coming out of…

Nothing wrong with being literal, Tabitha, it's a powerful image and this is probably precisely what John-BoB was after. My only problem with this is that the flaps are far too big to cover the gap were they folded back in! It's a difficult issue, this, and it's hard to get right.

David, that's a really great entry, I like the multiple light beams leaking out and the slits in the head are truly convincing. Opening his mouth was a great touch, too, and the colour change certainly fits the Matrix theme well!

I did once get to play a Wurlitzer, Glen, and the feeling of power it gives you is tremendous. The one I played didn't rise up through the floor, but having seen your entry I'm thinking of having one retro-fitted.

The problem with recognisable filters, such as KPT, only arises when they're misused. But CubanPete's entry makes the best use of the plug-in without it looking remotely corny: this is a great, dynamic lightning bolt that works particularly well, since the angle and perspective match the head precisely. A hole at the back end would have helped - but you can't have everything.

Nice idea, Brian Garrison, and a good alien too. The angle of the porthole is a little out of kilter with the shape of the head, but again this is a tricky one to get right: a touch of the Shear filter would have helped greatly here. The dripping goo on the back of the lid is excellent!

Always good to see a new contributor, and FouL-MouthD has turned in a great first entry, full of dynamism and excitement. Drawing light beams is never easy, but you've managed it really well - those beams coming from the eyes and ear are totally convincing.

A great concept in Atomicfog's entry - the shading round the head and eye holes make it work really well, and the new eye is a really good addition. I have a bit of a problem with the plate inside the head, though: I think if you'd rotated it 90° and applied a slight shear to it, you've have got a better sense of it following the shape of the skull. It is difficult matching 3D surfaces, especially when they're curved! There's a great plug-in called Andromeda 3D which does a good job of wrapping images around spheres.

I don't like picking a "winner" each week, as I think the entries are always so varied it's hard to put one technique above another. But tweaknik's contribution does, I feel, deserve special mention. Take a look at the full size version, and you'll see the meticulous attention to detail: the puckering of the skin where the side access hatch is bolted in (and, of course, the perfect perspective on the hatch itself), the subtle rendering of the staples holding the eyelids closed... this really is an extremely fine piece of work. It's turned the original photograph into something quite special, and it's a really strong image. Brilliant!

The final word, of course, should go to John-BoB, who requested this challenge in the first place. Any comments?

Re: Contest 24: John-BoB's challenge
First, Thankyou Steve for posting this challenge. This was for a contest for Adobe's Calender that was entitled "How Technology has Enlightened Minds" I knew what I wanted but not how to make it.
Maiden, Awsome job!!!! Is that the same bullet hole method you used on the syrup can?

Chris, I also like that things are coming out... Is that what is on your mind?

Neal, I loved yours... It made me laugh

African, You did what I did, I couldn't figure out how to peel back the skin so I just hid it with alot of picture noise

Tabitha, Steve was right that is exactly what I was trying to make!

David, AWSOME!

Glen, What song is he playing? Great peeling of the skin.

CubanPete, I Never thought of using lightning, it goes good with the picture

Brian, I liked that you are the only one who thought that the inside of his head should be skin colored.

FouL-MouthD, I liked that it looked like his head was blowing off with light.

Atomicfog, Neat Idea. I love the blending you did. The eye looks great

tweaknik, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Its cool though. You must have put alot of time into it. I love the detail of how you have the skin pinching up into that plate. Awsome.

Thankyou againg Steve for posting this. Here is what I came up with for the contest.(I had to submit this before Steve posted the Friday Challenge, So I hid what I could not do with what I could do.)
