Contest 38: Museum Piece
Here's this week's challenge (posted on my behalf by David while I'm away):

I've always enjoyed small, local museums. You never know what you might find. Any idea what could be in these cases? High res is here.

Re: Museum Piece
In my "I will learn to cheat at any cost" file, I have a cat behind bars (JUST the cat behind the bars....), a building that degenerates to a pinkish mush of steps, boarding and roadworks, a skeleton with no shadow, a shop partly turned into a stable and a partly broken fence with a partly broken 4x4....
I can't wait to destroy the museum!

Re: Museum Piece
MINE TOO !!

I must have started a dozen Friday Challenges at 10 or 11pm on a Thursday night, only to abandon them 2-3 hours later, half-complete, when I can stay awake no longer !

That's exactly what I do, too. I need to manage my time better.

not at all to critisize, but what is it in nw rain's picture that makes it look like the girl is hovering above the floor rather than standing on it

I was just getting my museum out to play with, and looked again at the unfinished projects in my file - the first copy of the cat is called "cat in cage", the 'many hours later' version is saved as "bloody cat"

Tom Baker returns to collect his scarf

Ok not much I know but holidays always throw me off track and I had restricted time. I wanted to include a dalek or two and other stuff but had a busy and tireing few days (yawns, drinks beer and ...... gets another) I was also thinking about the British Museum. After all most of the stuff in there has been pinched anyway so why should I not use the pickies Then I thought about turning the scene into a mobile chip shop. That would have been fun but alas not to be or I'd miss the deadline.

I've just realised I've had a bash at every Friday challenge since Christmas! Considering it took me four months to have a go I'm almost making up for my shyness.

Re: Contest 38: Museum Piece
Some really well worked-up entries this week - and as there are fewer of them, it gives me space to say a little bit more about each one.

NW Rain got in first with a great museum of jelly beans. Perspective works well, and I really like the way you've kept the reflection of the windows on the glass of those cases. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that it looks more like a photograph of jelly means pasted onto the glass than a case full of them. Perhaps a gap at the top would have helped, or some shading to recess them within the case slightly. That girl's great, though - and I love the way she's stamping on the sweets. With the light directly behind her, perhaps her hair could have been a little more translucent at the edges? Shadow works well, though! And Dezolat0r, I don't think she looks like she's floating - just a bit oversized, perhaps.

I had to laugh at Einstein D Kid's museum of wood - a really neat solution. But what's that leaking out of the front left case? Wood glue? Best thing about this one, for me, is the way you've turned that stone statue into a wooden one. I think the thing that makes this work especially well is the fact that the angle of the grain follows the perspective of the figure. Plus, of course, cutting round the chair in front of it does add to the realism.

It's certainly time for a Dr Who exhibition – and for those of you in the US and elsewhere, a new series of the TV show has just started here in the UK. BobbyJo's entry gives us a fine dematerialising Tardis (that's the blue police box, folks) - although I'm not sure it should really have a shadow with windows and the top sign cut out of it! The scarf works really well (is that hand drawn?) but, while 'Coming here soon' looks fine, the Dr Who logo looks to be at an awkward angle. The bottom of the logo should be angled down rather more than it is here!

Eventer has really worked on those reflections, and I have to say it's not easy. Look at it this way: if the cases are at right angles to the window, then the glass should act like a mirror - which means the reflections should be exactly on a level with the window, and parallel to it. Look at the reflection in the closest case on the right to see what I mean. In your second version, the middle case is almost there! The planets look good in their cases, though, and I do like the aliens - although I might have used a 1 pixel Defringe to get rid of that white halo around them.

For out-and-out realism, you really can't beat Paul McFadden's entry this week. That fox inside the case really does look to be in there - very subtle use of colouring and shading there, Paul. The reflection of the outside fox and the bird really add to the effect well. My only quibble (and you know there has to be one) is that the fox's feet are in the wrong place. You have them further up the room than the case support, whereas he's leaning on the frame further towards us. A slightly bigger fox would have fixed this perfectly. Like the graffiti art, by the way. One of your own?

Great work, everyone.

Another deadline missed but here's mine. I nearly had it finished last night but it was too late, even for a creature of the night.

I think its the remains of my original attempt at what david did, and I forgot to reset the picture, but woodglue works too

only problem I noticed with david's pic is that the middle left one has reflections where the glas was shattered
