Contest 47: Burger behemoth
Here's a photo I took in Paris recently, outside the natural history museum. Now we know what those burgers are made of! Can you liberate this beast before it gets processed into sausage meat?

High res is here.

Shouldn't that be "La McSausage meat"?

If that fails, dawn a disguise and make a run for it.

Re: Contest 47: Burger behemoth
Some fantastic entries this week - you've really taken this one to heart, and it's great to see so many different approaches.

MJ got there first, with our furry friend emerging from the ice. This is a great piece: not just the subtlety of the ice texture itself (look at how you can still see the nearside tusk against the body), but the detailed, perfect modelling of the fur beneath it. I don't know where you got that fur from, MJ, whether it was drawn or shaped to fit from another image, but it's a great fit. Tiny shame about the side of the mammoth's head peeking out on the left, though…

A friend of mine did a series of images in urban settings, all featuring elephants. His thesis was that elephants are everywhere, and you just don't notice them. So it is with Glen's multiple entries: that damn mammoth's cropping up all over the place. But this illustrates a good general principle: montages work far, far better when there's something obscuring part of the placed element. So for me, the first and last images work much better than the two where you can see the whole mammoth. That first one's so good, in fact, that it's earned you your long overdue title - so welcome, Montage Maestro!

Great packaging from Dezolat0r - a really neat job on the box, and a fair stab at those tomato ketchup sachets. Perspective's a bit of a problem here, though - and I'm sure you could have rebuilt the corner of that table, where it's obviously been broken off by a passing mammoth!

What is there left to say about Neal's entries? The man's a genius. I'll restrict myself to pointing out some of the less obvious subtleties: on the first image, the string round the next and the dripping paint on the letter T; on the subway image, the reflection of the feet in the wet floor and the recolouring to match the indoor lighting; on the circus image, the meticulous cutout of the headgear; on the poster, the grass poking up over the feet, and the general placement (love that tusk coming round the corner). Great work, Neal.

I'd feel much more able to judge Tabitha's image if I knew what she started with. Are all those mammoths positioned by you? Or did some of them come with the scene? No, that can't be the case… but when it's this difficult to tell if an image is a photograph or a montage, you know you must be doing something right. Great interaction between the beasts, a real sense of them all coexisting in the same space. Good stuff, Tabs.
