Contest 57: Take me on holiday
That's right, folks - I'm off to sunny France for two weeks of intensive non-computing. No email, no websites, not even a glimpse of Photoshop… how on earth will I survive?

I'll be taking my trusty accordion with me, of course. (Now there's something I kept quiet about.) It sounds so much better with warm French air blowing through its bellows.

Trouble is, the only photograph I could find of me playing it was taken back in March, when it was too cold for stripey T-shirts and strings of garlic. Anyone feel like placing me in a more appropriate setting?

High res - with clipping path, of course - is here. While I'm away, David Asch is going to be running things here, as usual, and he has two weeks' supply of Friday Challenges waiting to be posted. Thanks again, David.

See you all in a fortnight!

And on closer inspection it's brilliantly executed

Thanks Becky. Most of the transition was achieved with the Smudge/Blur tools, a lot more controlable than filters!

Re: Contest 57: Take me on holiday
Seems to have been very effective, David.

Filters are fine in moderation as long as you know not to overdo them, in some cases they seem to be akin to using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut simply because it's the first tool at hand.

I bought "Photoshop Most Wanted 2" by the usually great friendsofed, however, they seem to have been let loose with a copy of Photoshop that restricts moderate use of Photoshop filters.
Every tutorial is overlong and heavy upon the reliance of filters and you can actually see the progression of work from the basic onset, to the creation of something quite interesting, only to finish with an over stylised piece of nonsense at the end of the tutorial.

This book would be great if anything you produced as a result of it was actually useful in the long term or could be adapted for other photomontaging projects, but in reality apart from a rather heavy-handed introduction to filters you only ever create throwaway digital art which is nice but not very practical.
However, my money wasn't completely wasted I now have a nice shiney book on how not to use filters

Thank the Gods for the likes of Steve and his practical, no-nonsense approach to tutorials, I'm sure he won't thank me for heaping even more praise on him but the man deserves a round of applause for smashing the myth of Them (who know Photoshop) and Us (who would like to know).

Re: Contest 57: Take me on holiday
I totally agree. Look at sites like Flickr and anywhere that people can put up Photoshop creations and there will always be the 'used every filter in the arsenal' images, which, on the whole, look pretty nasty.

I think the fun part of filters is working out how to use them in subtle and creative ways. As you say, Steve is a pioneer in this way of thinking. I don't tend to look for how-to books now, apart from Cheat, naturally. I prefer things like The New Masters of Photoshop, which are fabulous coffee-table books and very inspirational.

Hi Maiden and David,

We are all of the same mind set. I' m sucker for Photoshop books, and I own a few written by filter mavens. I'm sure you've seen the titles, they're all similar: "Killer tips this," "Magic this," "Studio secrets this"--and the list goes on.

A filter doesn't replace talent.

And everyone's submissions are fantastic, this weeks challenge is going to be fun.

No just a cheapie.

I love Davids Renoir, a real cracker. I think I'll have a go at something classic like that

Aaah, la musica, la musica. Steve's off to France to cut another music CD. Oh, how I love those driving Latin rhythms.

(Anyone get the feeling Steve's going to be sorry he gave us his picture to play with?)

Great entries this week, naturally, I'll leave it to Steve to write his synopsis when he gets back.
