Contest 70: Gunpowder, treason and plot
On the 5th of November every year in the UK, we celebrate the day in 1605 when Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to blow up Parliament. Or do we simply lament his near miss?

Anyway, this year's the 400th anniversary of that historic event, so I thought I'd give you the chance to guess who might think of doing the same job today. There's a cellar here that more or less resembles the one under the Houses of Parliament in London, and a barrel here similar to the type Mr Fawkes used.

The rest is up to you!

I want you to recreate the Guy Fawkes scene, more or less - using whichever contemporary evildoer you think might be interesting in blowing up Parliament!

What a fantastic holiday! Say, since your blowing up Parliament, could we toss in our Head of State, too?

An excellent image, Neal. Bush's expression really makes the picture.

Re: Contest 70: Gunpowder, treason and plot
metacool, Guy Fawkes was the poor fool who was duped into a plot to blow-up the English Parliament during Queen Elizabeth the First's reign he and the other members of the Gunpowder Plot were staunch Catholics and plotted to make Mary Queen of Scots (also a staunch Catholic) the Queen of England. Guy Fawkes was arrested just before he could light the barrels of gunpowder that lay under the Houses of Parliament where Queen Elizabeth was due to open Parliament and was put to death by the very unsavioury means of being Hung, Drawn & Quartered. British people have celebrated this night of November the 5th ever since with bonfires and fireworks although thesedays it more about fireworks and an excuse to party than anything to do with history.

Re: Contest 70: Gunpowder, treason and plot
Hate to correct you, maiden, but Elizabeth had been dead two years by the time Guy Fawkes was fiddling with his wick, and she'd had Mary Queen of Scots executed 18 years earlier. The monarch at the time was James I (aka James VI of Scotland). But, as you say - it's more about an excuse to party than anything to do with history!
