Contest 92: This way in
Came across the website Millionaires24 this week - a bunch of guys who have figured out that if you're going to fleece people, choose people with loads of money. This is an 'exclusive' email hosting service, open to only the world's richest people. These lucky folk get a standard 512 Mb web space, and address book, email forwarding - all the usual stuff, in fact, except it costs them $399 a month. Obviously, none of those millionaires got where they are today by recognising a crap deal when they see it.

The front page on this website is rather lacklustre, though. They've tried for a kind of Audi burnished chrome look, and failed miserably.

We haven't really looked at interface design before, but this one seems too good a chance to pass up. How would you entice millionaires into this site? There must be a better way than this!

Crikey, I'm no webdesign genius but that's as poor as it comes even when you login using the default setting the main site is less than exceptional. white background and a very *naff chrome nav-bar.

*naff - Contemporary English colloquialism/slang for something very poor, underwhelming, un-inspiring, poorly crafted. Although it originally derived from the 1970s British comedy 'Porridge' starring Ronnie Barker as a subsitute for the 'F' word.

I wonder if it was set up by an oppressed African prince?

Why are you thinking of loaning him some money so that he can release the millions of dollars held in trust - I know I am

I missed last week's challenge by a hair, being in a business trip for the last 5 days. I really enjoyed the entries and wished I had time to complete mine. In fact, I'm jealous...

This week's is also quite challenging. The quality (or lack of) the front page makes someone ask himself:"Do I start from this or do I start from scratch?" This challenge makes me think of the animated GIF one of 2 weeks ago... User interface learning curve!

Please forgive me if I'm taking this off-topic for a second, but I've said that same thing about Porridge and just recently learnt that the word predates the show by years. The BBC/OED show 'Balderdash & Piffle' dated it to 1966 but suspects it's much older and there was some show - might have been the same series - which showed how the word was used in the gay slang language Polari to mean, um, well, nothing very terrible but perhaps not something I should say when I'm already straining the moderator's patience. But have a look at the OED:
http://www.oed.com/bbcwordhunt/naff.html

It's not clear whether the term really came from Polari or that the slang picked it up and I think it is clear that Porridge made it famous.

As I say, this has nothing to do with Photoshop and as I should've said, I don't mean to sound as if I'm criticising. Just thought you might be as interested in this etymology as I am.

William

I take your point, but as this site is getting more and more International I thought an explanation was in order - so sorry if it seemed as little patronising it wasn't my intent.

I don't take it as a criticism actually it was quite informative and I am quite interested in the etymology of words.

I thought maybe someone was jealous of all these millionaires and had a go at getting past security.

This took a while, and then I had to sacrifice colour and size to get the size down. original looked much better.

It was a lot of fun, especially now that I have kind of figured out how to make things move. Friday challange 2 weeks ago was my first attempt.

Don't worry about it, it does not have a very high evaluation of it either...
