Contest 131: I want an iPhone
I've been hankering after one of these gorgeous little devices ever since Steve Jobs unveiled it at MacWorld a couple of weeks ago. And it led me to think: the thing contains a phone, a music player, camera, a diary, and address book, a calculator, and so much more. How would we have assembled all these items in one unit, say, 50 years ago? How compact could we have made it? And what on earth would it look like? No images to download this week: you're on your own! |

I reckon this is about as compact as it can ever be, Mr Jobs! |

Blimey GKB - after seeing your entry I don't think I'll bother! If its not a trade secret where are you sourcing your images? _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Hi Josephine, I do hope that I've got you name correct. It doesn't seem quite right to refer to you as j.harvatt. Thanks for your kind comment. I actually get many of them on Google. The pic of the model just leapt out at me saying "use me, use me!" That was using '1950s fashion' for the search. The camera came from, if I remember correctly, a Rolleiflex web page where there were many pics of old model cameras. The record deck came from a website devoted to the old 'Dansette' make of record player. The records and the record cover were photoshopped, although the image of Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson took ages to find. Andy Pandy and Teddy Bear came from, would you believe, an Andy Pandy website!!! It's amazing what is out there. Many of my other images are taken by myself. Gordon |

Thanks Gordon - yes Josephine is good - I initially registered as jharvatt as I was new to the net and feeling a bit paranoid about how public it all was - and now I am still not savvy enough to know how to change it in my profile! Thanks for all the info although it was disappointing insofar as I always nurture the fantasy that there is a one -stop Aladdins cave of images out there somewhere that will save me all that rooting around.! I am just so impressed at how seamless you have made it - not just technically but in terms of the feel of it - I shall have to go away and think of something very different to avoid odious comparisons! _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Let's see. Video, music, phone, duck tape ... Point of trivia, The radio shown here is mine and still works, mostly. The phone really was a period wireless phone, know as an IMTS phone. Now, if I could just find that camera! |

GKB, Yes -- they are, but supplies are limited. And if you order in next 30 minutes, Apple with throw in a second iPhone for half the price! |

Who remembers the HeathKit 862P, the portable version of their successful 'All in One'? It took ages to build and calibrate and the 35 minute battery life meant you really needed to transport a spare. But once built and in use it was certainly a head turner. Here am I in Putney (home of the University boat race) the day after I finished it. Boy did I get some looks especially from the girls!! |
