Contest 220: City in the clouds
TV news channels around the world have had difficulty coming up with suitable images to depict the current banking crisis. We've had plenty of brokers with their heads in their hands, downward-spiralling graphs, and so on.

One of the most appealing images I've seen was on BBC news this week, showing the financial district of London shrouded in fog. I thought it was a Photoshop job at first, but as it's seen from a circling helicopter I've come to think it's definitely real footage. Here are a couple of stills:

This week's challenge is to reproduce this effect, or a similar one, on your own home town or city. You'll have to source your own starting images, of course - but that should make for some variety!

Yes that was real footage from one of the news helicopters over central London. It was beautiful.
I remember one morning around 1972, when I was learning to fly; the countryside was swathed in radiation fog - it was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen.
This one should produce some nice artistry.

Can't seem to source a suitable image of my City looks like I will have to get the camera and tripod out.

By-the-way Gordon the idea of 'Radiation Fog' is terrifying I can't help but imagine a green mist with supernatural monsters roaming about

I finally can put to use the pictures I took a couple years back, where I got the opportunity to hang out the side of a helicopter and capture some great skylines of rural orange county and downtown los angeles.

My home town (more of a big village) is so flat and low lying it would all be covered by cloud - I shall have to go to the archives ....

Nice one Stefan.
Becky, don't worry; radiation fog is formed when the heat is radiated from the ground and causes water vapour to condense out as that wispy, up to around 15 feet deep mist. You can expect it at this time of year when you have a clear sky overnight. If you do see it turning green, however, start running!

Stefan that's simply stunning, love the tone effect perhaps you can share how you acheived it?

Sheffield City Centre view from Shrewsbury Road overlooking Sheffield Railway Station.

Hi Maiden,

thank you very much. I just adjusted the tone with curves... added cyan and a bit of yellow (I think, can't quite remember it now..I always go on feeling and see what happens)...and then I just desaturated the whole thing a bit. Of course you can do this in many ,more complicated, and perhaps more subtle ways, but when it looks ok, it looks ok I always think.

Destination: Los Angeles, California

I added the helicopter to portray the concept of mass media. Might I add the entries above me look spectacular!

Re: Contest 220: City in the clouds
This weekend is fully committed, so not much time to devote to this one. My home town in Bedfordshire does not have the elaborate scenery of Los Angeles, Antwerp, Warwick, or Sheffield - great images folks, but we do have an Aerodrome at Old Warden, home of the Shuttleworth Collection, so here's my tribute to aviation. This is where I live coupled with a Googled Flight Sim shot. My house is somewhere in the middle, but it would be tacky to have an arrow pointing to it!

Look forward to seeing what others come up with.

Nick

Just couldn't get a decent angle for a shot of my home village so I pulled this shot of NY taken from the top of the Empire State Building out of the archives.
