Challenge 383: Light up the town

Piccadilly Circus is at the very heart of London, and visiting it for the first time ranks as one of my first big childhood disappointments (well, I was expecting, you know, a circus). The name dates back to the early 17th Century, when it was the site of a shop selling "piccadills", a kind of Elizabethan ruff collar.

Today, though, Piccadilly Circus is best known for its brash illuminated advertising hoardings. The first electric signs were installed in 1910, with the façade of the London Pavilion (the building on the left) covered in electric billboards in 1923. The signs used to be neon tubes, which were replaced to great acclaim every few years; now, they're a mixture of huge computer screens showing a variety of animated commercials, and permanent, traditional lit signage.

Here's a photograph of the scene taken in daylight. Of course, all this looks very much better at night. Care to give it a go? Feel free to design your own signage, if you like.

The last few weeks have been extremely busy, so I've had little chance to take part. Just wanted to say merry Xmas to all the great people on here and thanks to Steve for looking after us for another year. Let's hope 2012 brings health and happiness to all. Here's my version of Piccadilly.

Late greetings for Christmas/Holidays, but think of you.

Too busy doing all the Christmas food stuff (my responsibility), but more: including later unexpected recovering my sister on Christmas Eve after skiing accident in France. Broken but all in place now needing several weeks to recover.

On that aspect I hope 2011->2012 New Year is better.

Hi, I'm still here, lurking as usual and for the next few months working through my photography diploma course. I still can't believe there is so much writing to do in an essentially visual medium as well as providing forty mounted exhibition prints!

In the meanwhile have a Happy New Year.
