Thanks, I'm not sure that Mr C. fits into the scene as seemlesly I'd like but I couldn't work out exactly what was wrong.

Re: Contest 3: Build me a window
I think, if I was pushed to make a criticism, it would be that the sledgehammer's perspective seems a bit off as the hand (the one gripping the handle) is out of proportion to the rest of his body and the handle is a little thick at that end. Also the shadow of Steve's head indicates the light is from the Left but the light through the French Doors is coming from the Right.

Otherwise a faultless image.

Re: Contest 3: Build me a window
I agree the lighting is awkward, I wouldn't say the light from the french doors wouldn't affect him that much though, I was using the halogen light more than anything else.

The hammer was a pain, it wasn't quite the right angle, I suppose I could have made one from scratch (probably a lot quicker than messing with this one). The proportion of his hand is probably just my masking, as it's part of the original body (he was holding a shovel).

I could have spent hours more on the image but left it there for fear of messing up completely.

Yes, i thought the shadow was coming from the halogen light so its fine. Although I would probably not have it quite as strong as you have, a bit less shadow under the chin (as it makes the face come forward slightly with too much shadow there)

But thats just me being picky, i love the concept, the dust, the brick and plaster work, light outside matching that of the french doors, all in all its my kind of image!

Couple of crits, the sledgehammer looks all wrong to me and steve's face is a different skin colour to his hands.
Apart from that great work

Re: Contest 3: Build me a window
At the end of the day the challenge was to build Steve a window and with that you succeeded with a really funny entry, Trinity.

Lighting, I find, is alway really tricky (how much direct/ambient interior lighting affects direct/ambient exterior lighting and vice versa) but I think Russ is correct, it's not so much the direction as the intensity of the shadow that makes it look out of place (if you look under the table the chairs cast a stronger shadow from the light of the French Doors than they do from the Halogen Light) and I suppose the fact that the sledgehammer handle is thicker at that end just makes it appear Steve's hand is out of proportion.

It's easy to be picky when it's someone else's work, but that isn't to cast any doubt upon your artistic accomplishment. You take on things far more complex that I do. My image is straight forward, just the window nothing more. But you really know how to build a montage and populate it with alsorts of complimentary things. So more kudos to you, long may you entertain us.

Thanks Maiden, et al, I'm quite OK with critique (as long as it has a good founding), I'd much prefer to have my shortcomings highlighted, than to carry on making the same mistakes.

Talking of which, I've reworked it somewhat (why I didn't think of using the original handle from the body before, I'll never know )

He still looks a little 'David Dickinson' but I think it's an improvent on the last one.

That's much better - Steve's colour also blends him into the environment, I'm sure by Monday he will be Chuffed.

Nicely done!

I would be tempted to add a little shading on the edges of the window frames (transoms), to give them a bit of depth.

That's a pretty good picture, Droo31k, it blends into the kitchen nicely.

The scenery behind the window matches well the scenery through the French Doors, the wall depth is about right, the frame is also nicely done - although I agree with Trinity about adding a bit of shading for depth,

It would appear you have used Plastic Wrap on the glazing, which tends to give it the appearance of plastic sheets rather than glass sheen, but still a very good image.

Ha ha ha ha ha trinity you really crack me up. Leaning that picture on the bench is a classy touch.

But you've no idea how close to the truth you've got...

Great entries all round!

Thanks Steve. I guess we'll be seeing you in the new series of DIY SOS

Re: Contest 3: Build me a window
And so another contest draws to a close, with a fantastic set of entries. First off the mark was maiden, as usual, with a stunning entry that included just about everything I could have hoped for. A sheen on the glass, proper depth to the walls, even a geometrically correct reflection of the table and chairs in the window - this was a meticulous and inspired piece of work, so many congratulations for that!

Ryan went for a leaded glass effect - doors, rather than a window - but did leave me space to squeeze behind the bench to get out into the garden. The lack of door handles could cause problems once I got there, though! An even more suburban entry from Russ, who seems to have taken lessons in soft furnishings from my mother. Still, I liked the powerbook and camera on the table, the cat in front of the flap is a nice touch, and the Photoshop box at the back fits in well! And great to see the boiled egg from the first challenge making a welcome return there, too. Interestingly, that's exactly where I photographed it.

An ethereal entry from uk2usadaz combined a real photograph of a curtained window with great precision. Like the way you've moved that original picture back into view on the opposite wall. The glowing, rosy effect gives it a nice touch, but perhaps the moth-eaten edges are a step too far? Nice work, too, from Droo31k, with a good perspective on the window and a great choice of view beyond. (Sadly, all I'd see through that wall would be my neighbour's greenhouse.)

A great spread of stained glass from Tabitha with a well-shaped and shaded arch - matches my pew perfectly! I liked the additional touches, such as the shine on the table and the vases of flowers on the back of the pew.

All rounded off nicely with a great entry from Trinity, who's managed to demolish that back wall perfectly - the bricks blend seamlessly into the wall, the view works well. And look at all those extras! The picture lying against the back of the bench, the pile of brick dust not only on the bench, but on the top of the picture; the layer of dust on the table... not to mention, of course, that bloke with the plaid shirt and the sledgehammer. Now I'm sure I recognise him from somewhere...
