This was a tricky one, and deliberately so: matching skintones is an essential Photoshop skill, and it's encouraging to see so many of you have managed to balance them so well here. mguyer kicked things off with a straightforward placement in the scene. A few issues here, Martin: firstly, the people are all too low. If you have the third edition of the book, check out the section on horizon lines. When David photographed this scene, he was holding the camera to his eye: so everyone here is either taller or shorter, relative to him (and you can see David's a couple of inches taller than Born2Run's mum). Your additions, being so far in the foreground, should be at least as tall as those behind. Secondly, I've noticed you have a fondness for feathering the edges of your selections. Although this can help to blend images into a soft background, don't overdo it! The back of the yellow shirt, for example, just looks fuzzy. Your second entry was much better: the people well integrated into the scene, and the shadows beneath them are great. The man in yellow still looks a little pale, though - although swapping out a new head in the third entry was a good dodge! In his enthusiasm for humiliating Dubya each week, Neal seems to have overlooked the strong greenish tinge to the Mexican guitarists (Guitarristas?). Perhaps they're just envious of the attention George is getting? But some great placement of the people, even though the woman in the red shirt seems to be photographing something else entirely. Damn, though, that guy in the yellow shirt is tricky to colour match! The second entry from Neal is fantastic - taking people out of their clothes will certainly come up as a Challenge at some point. But just look at the attention to detail that's required! Here are a few of the less obvious intricacies: the rebuilding of the woman in red's sandals and hat interior; the completion of the video camera; the total reconstruction of the guitars, where the hands have been removed. Not to mention, of course, all those sleeves and neck holes! Slightly disturbed by the fact that the rear guitarist seems to be playing a featureless block of wood. Is he just there for show, do you think? A hugely enjoyable montage from Glen, with dancing guitarist puppets wielded by people who really do look like puppeteers. I particularly like the way all the photographers are capturing an interesting event - including Elvis lurking in the background there. Splendid job - shadows and everything! And good colour matching, except (once again) for the guy in the yellow shirt… Kenny's being too hard on himself this week - "the more adjustments I make, the worse it gets," he says. But the placing, shading and colouring are great; this was a really tricky task, and the result here is that you have to look twice to see who's been montaged in and who was part of the original photograph. Give yourself more credit, Kenny! I like the placement of all the people in Pooch's entry, but those Mexicans do seem to have a rather unnatural shade of clothing. It's not just skintones - you need to make sure the whole image is consistent! Good shadows, though. The last post of the week comes from rufus, with a set of people well integrated into the scene. The woman in red's still a little pink, though, and there's still the problem everyone's had with the guy in yellow! But the main thing here is the sightlines: apart from the woman in red, these people look as if they're filming empty space. It's really just a question of how far back in the scene they need to go! Great work, everyone. And, just to prove it can be done - here's that man in the yellow shirt with the blue taken out of his skintone, together with the Curves that did the job: |
