I have been having a play with the art history brush, something I haven't tried before.

I think this what I originally had in mind but I like Steves' (version #2 without droplets) better. Rufus' are really neat but I think I would like those better without the droplets as well. This is my last shot at this one.

Poor I know, hardly worth entering, I know that too. The fact is we haven't had much rain round my part of the world in the last week.

Re: Contest 67: Rain on Martin's Hibiscus
I never fail to be amazed at the wealth of talent shown on this forum, and you seem to relish even the trickiest jobs. This week's was a really tough one - but there have been some fantastic entries.

maiden got in first with a stunning interpretation. "No plug-ins were harmed in the production of this image," she says, so it was all done by hand - perhaps with the help of some layer styles. Delicate, detailed work, and especially well shaped water drops - a thoroughly convincing piece of work.

The simple solution never seems to appeal to rufus, who's turned the single flower into a vase full. Good water drops (if perhaps a little heavy on the drop shadows) and great reflections make this a stunning image. My only real concern is with the opacity of the vase: we can see the stems in it, but not the background through it. Interesting effect with the Art History Brush in the second entry, there. Rufus, I know, used Layer Styles to create the water drop effect - and he's generously made this style available to us all. Download it here and try it for yourself. (Note: if this inadvertently downloads itself as a text file, just delete the .txt suffix, leaving just .asl, and it should work fine.)

mguyer turned in a very restrained entry to his own puzzle. The shading's fine, but since we can see the petal texture so clearly through the drops, there really needs to be some distortion there! Simplest way it to duplicate the background, offset it slightly, and mask it with the drops. Bit of Sphereize wouldn't go amiss, too. Second entry is stronger - but the third looks like rain on a photograph of a flower, is that intentional? And I think the drops in the second entry are too small, and too harshly shaded. Don't forget to make them wrap around the contours of the flower!

I don't want to go on about dog breath here, but CWBasset really should look into her dog's diet. Whatever it's been eating has had a very corrosive effect on that hibiscus! Seriously, though, I think the problem is entirely down to the angle of the lighting: switch it around so it's lit from the top, and this one would work a lot better.

Can't really understand why Neal prefers PS5 to PS7 (there have been a couple of good upgrades since then, Neal!) but it's a masterful piece of dew dropping. A hugely convincing piece of work! And I love the corrosion in the second entry - that smoke really sets it off well. And there's some very fine glue in the third entry - except that, surely, the glue drips should run along the line of the flower and then drip vertically off the edge? Some good tape in the fourth entry - particularly like the torn edges. Thanks for the entertaining images!

Nice rain technique from Lexus this week, and I think the recolouring is a great idea. Not sure about the drop shadow, though, it seems a little flat to me. Oh, and I'm really sorry to have missed out a crit on your entry last week, it was an oversight. No sleight intended! You get enough flak here as it is, I wouldn't want you to think there was something personal!

BobbyJo has given us some good, splashy raindrops - I especially liek the way they drip off the edges of the flower, and down into the middle. You're the only one to really follow the contours of the petal, and the attention to detail really shows. But perhaps a bit too sparse overall? More rain drops needed!

A great first entry from Steve Hill - welcome to the forum! Good lighting on the drops, but I'm concerned that they're a little too round for this view of the flower. I'd be tempted to squeeze them vertically to fit the perspective better. Those two drops in mid air confuse me rather!

Love the frog in jwhite's entry - just what we'd expect from a man with such a strong interest in wildlife. Good lighting on the water drops, but I wonder about the shape of the drops themselves: I'd go for rounder drops overall on this one.

An unusually restrained entry from Glen rounds off this week's entries. Just a couple of drops - but what lovely drops they are. Less is more, folks!

Ok Yet another contest that I missed.. hope you people don't mind I contribute anyway. (It's good training)

Again tried a subtle look. As everyone else I used layer styles.. I tried to have several... adding a different hues and refractions depending on where on the flower it was..

[Drop Shadow] - [Inner Shadow] - [Outer Glow] - [Inner Glow] - [Bevel and Emboss] - [Gradient Overlay] - [Pattern Overlay (Very Subtle)]
