Becky, welcome back and how do you save a thing like that properly? ( I read the thingie in Steve's book but I can't seem to get it right)

Optimisation is probably the hardest part of making a gif animation. Making things move is relatively simple compared with compressing the filesize down so that it plays on the internet and still looks good.

A couple of key factors is selecting your colour profile usually 'Selective' or 'Perceptual' are the best options but try each each one and see what both looks good and saves on filesize.

If you have an object animated with a number of layers chances are that it will require a Transparency setting so ensure 'Transparency' is checked in the Optimise dialogue box this will instantly save you loads on you final filesize.

Next take a close look at the 'lossy' settings a value around 10-20 will further optimise your gif animation but play around because adding in 'lossy' will mean some image degradation but this can usually be counteracted with a 'Dither' set to 'Diffusion' at 100% however, dithering will also increase the filesize so it requires a bit of playing around with to get the right balance.

Next look to reduce your colour palette, too many colours will look good but ultimately mean larger file sizes. So aim to reduce your colour palette to either 64 or 32 colours. If you reduce your colour set down and a lot of the key colours are lost in the image making it look dull and washed out put it back to the maximum level and click the little list icon next to the 'colour' box to view the 'Color Table' you can then see all the colours that make up your image, click on the key colours (Ctrl click for multiple colours) and you can then click to lock those colours with the lock icon at the bottom of the 'Color Table' Palette. Then when you come to reduce your colour palette to say 64 or 32 colours it will retain those locked key colours.

You can also click on the Optimize palette's fly-out button (the black triangle in a circle on the top right of the palette) and select 'Optimize to Filesize' you can then enter a target filesize and let ImageReady do the optimising - however this is a less than satisfactory method if you require more control over the look of you gif animation.

I encourage you to have a play around with all the Optimise settings as that's the best way of understanding what each bit does.

One last final trick is you can create a tv-line effect by creating a 2x2 pixel document with a transparent background and Marquee selecting the topmost half of the document and filling with black and saving that using Edit/Define Pattern in Photoshop. Then creating a new layer and filling using Edit/Fill... then selecting Pattern from the 'Use' drop-down menu and then picking your tv-line pattern. This fills the layer with 1 pixel horizontal lines. This can save you a lot of filesize as gif works by banding block of colours into horizontal lines and if every other line is a constant black line then there is less information for the gif to have to store, however you suffer the consquences of having black TV lines across your images which can either look completely cool or completely horrible, but it is one more trick up your sleeve if optimisation is crucial.

I hope that helps,
Becky

That was hard work, but lots of fun.

Definitly need some more processing power. The rock in the photo is Fifshire Rock in Nelson Harbour, New Zealand. Photographed yesterday, April 1st.

Maiden, you are mad a s a badger. This is not funny. It happened to me once and I had to go against traffic to stop the fool... in my case it was a Montreal City bus. I am traumatized and you me back awful souvenirs...

This is awesomw! Everything is there, shadows, the move in the drivers head, the wheels spinning, the bag flying around... did you sleep to do this?

Thanks Dalton, hope you solve your Image Ready problems, you can always PM me if you need any help or advice which also go for anybody else struggling with the quirkiness of Image Ready.

Well it wasn't meant to be the busdriver pressurising the cyclist, but the cyclist getting in the way of the bus. Personally I would never press a cyclist to force them into doing anything dangerous, I usually move out to overtake giving them plenty of room, however I do run into a few cyclist who have no respect for anybody else on the road and will jump red lights, race up the side of my bus (a very dangerous practice as they are almost completely in my blind spot) and pulling out in front of the bus, going the wrong way up one-way streets etc.

As for the animation it took me about 4 hours in total much of that selecting and creating new layers for each of the moving parts, of which there were quite a few, as just about everything in my gif is moving - which also meant a lot of optimisation.

I too haven't a clue - yet. This is going to be a very steep learning curve if I'm going to do anything for this week.

First I found that I couldn't import the Giff into PS, then I couldn't find a pen tool in IR to break the image down and had to use the erase tool. Now it only saves as a PSD file!

I'm sure I'll get there. But if it took Becky four hours to produce that stunning effect, and she is very much in command of what she is doing, it could be weeks before I surface again!!

Ted what you need to do to import gif into Photoshop is to use ImageReady first. Open ImageReady and import the gif animation and then click on "Edit in Photoshop" button at the bottom of the Tool's Palette or Shift+Ctrl+M (PC) Shift+Cmd+M (Mac).

In Photoshop you can then use all the usual image editing tools and when you are finished return it to ImageReady for animation and optimisation etc.

When saving an animation from ImageReady as a gif choose "Save Optimised" Ctrl+Alt+S (PC) Cmd+Option+S (Mac) or "Saved Optimised as..." Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S (PC) Cmd+Shift+Option+S (Mac) from the "Save as Type" dropdown menu select "Images Only (*.gif)" name your animation and hey presto.

No if you examine buses you will see the front wheels are further back than on a car or lorry they are well behind the driver's cab which is why we need more room coming out of junctions as we have to bring the nose of the bus far further forward before we can start steering - a lot of motorists don't take this into consideration which is why I spend most of my time stuck at junctions awaiting enough room to move out safely.
