Re: Contest 112: The upper deck
Thanks Vibeke and Pierre. I was thinking Steve might introduce a means by which one can delete and replace a picture as, in this case - and having posted, I found I needed to make a few character size tweaks. From your kind comments I think I'll leave it and read Steve's comments.

Nikons schmikons! With a Canon - I can!

Ted

Pierre, do you want the pictures of Brouade kept on the web site?

Sophie, all the characters are from 500 Model Poses.

Ted, where do I find 500 model poses. For my posting I took a picture of my wife from the right angle and worked with that. Unfortunately for her that is why she is riding the bus all by herself. thanks, Marty

Eggbox! I've given it a try. ( Click edit - edit box appears, change image name, click edit.) Post new image. If there's an image here. Well it's worth a try.

Re: Contest 112: The upper deck
Marty, the compilation is called "500 Model Poses" and is published by Ilex Press in the UK (www.ilex-press.com). The ISBN number is 1-904705-53-7 and I'm sure you can order it through Amazon. However, as Steve commented to Sophie a couple of weeks ago, there is an HTML link on the HTCIP CD which offers a special discount. The published price is about £25 (say $45). It is a wonderful character source which I use a lot.

Marty, there's a link to the book on the home page of this web-site! Click on Back to the Book, then enter the site. Click on links, and the link to the book is under Commercial Image Libraries.

Wayne's right! The special price for Stateside buyers is $28.76 from the Barrons link. It's cheaper than I paid!! By character source I meant a place where I can find characters (people) to use in my pictures. And like you, Marty, I too will take a picture if no other source works.

Here's my contribution. It got off to a good start but ran out of steam - and metaphors.

Re: Contest 112: The upper deck
Well, this was a tricky one! I knew it would be tough, and I hope you didn't all find it too much of a chore. It's tasks like this that really stretch your Photoshop skills, and encourage you to find techniques that you'll remember and use later.

First on the upper deck was Ben Mills, who's given us a celebrity-packed outing. Looks to me like you've created a separate mask for each character, Ben - which could explain why Kofi Annan's clothing is seeping out below HM the Q. Best solution in these cases is to outline the side of the bus (without the windows), and make a new layer from that - then place all the people behind it. And use Curves to match their skin tones!

Alice and the Mad Hatter join the bus in raffy's entry, complete with disappearing Cheshire Cat. Replacing the Hatter and the dormouse with cats was inevitable, I suppose - but it does serve to make the black and white nature of the original Tenniel drawings look that much more out of place. A bit of colouring in, perhaps?

Changing body angles is always tricky; the key is to do it without making people look too thin. Dave.cox has had a good stab at this, with great poses on the man in the white shirt and the girl in the pink dress (although she's a little small). I particularly like the man on the far right, too - a great pose and position. Make sure you don't squash them, though! And as for the lettering: the vertical line on the divider gives you the vertical you need to match for the text.

Good reflections from Johanna, and a fine selection of characters - again, though, make sure people don't end up too compressed. I do like Dr Paine's advertisement!

Great work from Wayne, with fantastic glass effects and perfect poses and placement. I think the people may be a fraction too small, but otherwise this is a thoroughly convincing job: in particular, the two half hidden figures on the far side add greatly to the realism. Excellent!

Just the one passenger from mguyer - is that Mrs Guyer, perhaps? Again, she seems a little small, but otherwise this is well realized. Great tone matching: she blends in perfectly.

An excellent gag from james: all those phones using people to speak on, a really clever notion. And the extrusion on the phones gives them just the right 3D effect. This is a really funny and well executed job, James - and one which certainly earns you a title. So let's see... I think Surreal Spoofer best sums up this week's contribution. A very fine second entry too - apart from the orange gentleman with the fake moustache on the far right...

Glad to see vibeke's had the good sense to wear a raincoat when visiting London. A good choice of people - although the two on the far right seem to be a little too close to the windows for comfort. Good blending, though, and I like the way the boy's hand is resting on the back of the seat in front of him.

Overcrowding is certainly a theme in Tom's entry - plenty of great action going on there, and teh man with his face pressed against the glass works really well. Do they need to make these buses even bigger, do you think?

A great penguin theme from j.harvatt, with some excellent positioning and a good sense of crowding (but why are there no penguins on the far side?). The string of lights almost works: I think we need a wire to hold them up, and perhaps some brighter highlights in the middle of each bulb.

A very fine entry from Eggbox, with fantastic angles and poses and a great camera's eye view. The man with the girl on the far side is a little too small - a recurring theme, this week. Great reflections, though! But watch the angles on the text: the word Canon, and the camera, should have verticals that correspond to the uprights between the windows. Shear, rather than rotate!

A refreshingly different approach from michael sinclair: that's our original bus side, rotated and sheared to make an interior view. Great characters, and it's certainly a seating upgrade I'd like to see on buses. Hmm... not sure the conductor's shadow should be visible on top of the glass! A couple of reflections of the interior view would have worked wonders here.

Beautiful and wonderful work from char, stuffed with old film stars who fit perfectly in the scene. I'd have taken the wheels off the car, though, and blended it into the top of the bus more; but this is a really entertaining job! Excellent!

A great set of characters from David Asch, and a nice idea changing the colour of the bus to match the EasyJet/Bus/Whatever corporate orange. Fantastic reflections and poses, I really like this one. Good to see you taking time off from your tech support role to enter the Challenge!

Buses may be slow, but Pierre's entry shows them to be at a standstill! A very neat idea. Where on earth can the skeleton on the left's legs be going, though?

A hugely entertaining image from eyal fitoussi, capturing the horror poster theme with great panache. We do like our blood and gore, don't we!

Some outstanding work this week. And thanks to those of you who have added your avatars: it really helps me to see what you look like!

Thanks for that Steve, you're right about the lights I got a bit lazy there, similarly with the passengers I just ran out of puff so pretended that there was nothing for them to look at on the other side.
