Hey Tank172. I really like that block of water playing field. If the game looses power, do the players get an instant bath? |

Bit of old politics but hopefully you will understand (if not check the image filename) "You sank my Battleship!!!" Maggie considered cheating to be just part of the game - in her view the end always justified the means |

Thanks, Dave. Hehe, there are still some bugs in the hardware...not to worry though, we at VR Paradise, Inc still have 110 years to think about it! Want to be a beta tester? |

May I also say that the images produced by Char and Tank are beautiful with very clever ideas behind them. I also particularly like Babybiker's and Wayne's battleships too. If I actually get around to completing my effort then you will see that there are some similarities to Maiden's great image. I have been working on it for days and hope to get it finished in time this evening. Well done all there are some really fine pictures. Re: Contest 128: Playing Battleships
Some inspired work this week: interesting how such a plain box can spark off so many ideas! Babybiker was first onto the stormy seas, sticking my mugshot into a rather neat naval uniform. I like the way the flames are eating away the board here - but the game itself seems a little underdeveloped, wouldn't you say? Great concept, though. A fine three dimensional entry from Wayne, whose battleships are cruising in a real sea. It must have been tricky to find photos of ships from this angle, so some great research there! A great radar board, too, and the joysticks are clearly a must have. Very fine shadows! An almost Escher-like view from dave.cox, with a scifi scene that breaks through the dimensions set by the game surfaces. I'd love to see the extended set of rules for this game, Dave. Michael Sinclair's battleship is under fearsome attack - as his second entry shows all too clearly. Strange, with all that going on, you'd think the crowd would be paying attention: they seem more interested in something happening just out of the frame. And where did the game go? A very neat twist from mguyer, with Mrs mguyer (she must have a name of her own, surely?) battling Mah Jong while doing two crosswords at the same time. She certainly likes her puzzles! A good job fitting the game in there, Marty, although as I always say, tucking it slightly behind a foreground element would have added greatly to the realism. No reflection? An aerial bombardment from Dirtdoctor23 - looks like a direct hit there. I like the idea of the planes, and the one that's coming out of the screen adds a more dynamic element. Not sure about the sea in the vertical screen: the horizon appears to be at the right angle, but the water isn't! And are you sure mustard yellow is the best choice for the game hardware? Truly fabulous work from Char this week: a stunning entry, full of intrigue and exotic decoration. There's so much texture here, both on the game surface itself and around the edge; the 3D elements, such as the map and the lamps, add tremendously to the effect. And adding the rippling water surface is a real treat! Wonderful, Char, a fantastic entry. Tank172's been at the 3D apps again - to tremendous effect. Not just an excellent suirreal idea, but one that's been beautifully realised in a entry full of texture and interest. The blocks of water are intriguing: and the view through the glass block at the back has been expertly achieved. Excellent! A hark back to the Falklands War from maiden - with the Argentine flagship, the General Belgrano, being blown out of the water: that's a map of the Falklands above, with Maggie Thatcher cunningly reflected in the far side and General Pinochet reflected on this side. Such attention to detail! Interesting historical fact: the ship that was called the General Belgrano when it sank was originally named the USS Phoenix, and was the only US battleship to escape being destroyed at Pearl Harbour. Great political comment from BigVern - with a very nicely drawn newspaper pinned on the cork board behind. Loads of extra detail - Love the Horse Eats House, I don't know why that tickles me so much. I recognise that wallpaper, too! But why is the game on a billiards table? Tom apologises for his 'sloppy' entry - but the creation of that hole in the screen looks like it's really been worked on. A neat idea, and some great distortion of the unexploded missile beneath the water surface. Beautiful! An unusually animal based theme from Steve Mac - straying into territory normally claimed by Raffy and jwhite! A great idea, even if the 'mouse' is a gerbil. The exotic playing pieces are a nice touch. There's something a little unfinished about it this week, Steve - did you run out of time? Really enjoyed the entries this week, as always. Good work! |

Re: Contest 128: Playing Battleships
Thanks for your comments Steve. I made a billiards table because I believed it suitably counterpointed with the ambience of the wallpaper. Actually it really started out drawn as a small card table but I couldn't quite make a convincing slightly raised wooden border to work around it and after playing around with bevel and emboss it started to look nice and curvy so I left the border that way and expanded the size of the table. Making a larger table also had the knock on effect that there were fewer other background details to worry about. Cheers BigVern _________________ There are holes in the sky where the rain gets in. Yup, I've got a lot of things going on.Not all of a good nature but the forum keeps my sanity, although you wouldn't know that from my entries. Thanks for the input. I take it you guys don't have chipmunks on your side of the pond. Thanks Steve _________________ Steve Mac |

Thank you for the comments, Steve. I got lucky with the ships, borrowing them from a 'naval combat strategy game' site! |
