Re: Contest 138: Make me a statue
George is a polystyrene 'fallas' monument from Valencia which got burnt on Sunday evening! I shot it with an idea to getting the perspective 'right' for this project - It's a lot easier if you get it right in the camera, and you get to eat 'Churros con Chocolate' too! Philip |

Re: Contest 138: Make me a statue
Many inspired entries this week - some great ideas, and some fantastic Photoshop work. First up on the plinth was Dirtdoctor23, with a fitting tribute to the twin towers. A good colour match, but some rather tricky perspective here: the angle of the towers doesn't match the plinth. The solution is to split the towers into front and sides, and distort the fronts to match the perspective of the plinth: A great animation from james, who clearly isn't too fond of our current government here in the UK. Is he making a monkey of us all? Or the other way around? Good perspective here, especially on the boots dispenser on the front of the plinth. A rather beautiful entry from Tom, who's clearly enjoying the process of reflecting things in water. A good angle on the statue, although the shading seems a little too strong: I've have applied the Shadows/highlights adjustment here, I think. Like the graffiti yin yang on the side! A fine copy of the book from GKB, even if the hue doesn't quite match the plinth. Great engraved lettering here! My Latin's a little rusty, I'm afraid, and Babelfish doesn't seem to offer a Latin translation service. Got 'hard', but not a clue on the last word! A perfect viewpoint from mguyer, with a statue that ably matches the one that's there at present. The colour, the scale, and the angle all fit perfectly - nice work, Marty. And a funny second entry as well. A very fine animation from michael sinclair, with excellent rippling water as well. That prancing horse must have taken some time! A very clever second entry, too - no wonder Nelson's looking askance. As dave.cox points out, it is hard to find anything to match the strong angle of the plinth. And an egg timer - well, why not. Although I can't see a council official turning this baby over once an hour. The pigeon's a nice touch. There's a reeal Egyptian theme to Steve Mac's entry, with statues all round - and even a Sphinx atop the South African embassy. Excellently placed hieroglyphics, and the two tourists provide a much-needed human scale. When in doubt - go for a garden gnome! At least, that's GKB's approach to the problem. A really funny entry, with great fish, beautifully submerged. bit of a problem with the perspective on the water surface, though: those ripples should surely get very much smaller off in the distance, don’t you think? A definite change in the weather from Ben Mills, with a fine figure (Isaac Newton, I believe?) surrounded by a floral arrangement. The added lichen is a good addition here, too. There's a fantastic evening feel too Vibeke's entry, with a dolphin lurching out of a spray of water: the water stains down the plinth, and the puddle on the pavement below, are great additions. A very exuberant entry, with fantastic colouring. And an excellent seagull in the second entry, too. After I posted this week's Challenge, David Asch warned me that I might have let myself in for something tricky... and Ben grasped the opportunity. Glad to see my hair still has its lustrous dark sheen, despite now being made of stone. Memo to self: must fix the curtain in the bathroom... Excellent work from Philip Saunders, with a great St George dropping his lance into - er - a crocodile? A fantastic pool of blood, though: very subtle, but extremely well realised. Great stuff. And yet another dazzling piece of virtuoso Flash work from char, who has given us an extraordinary show. So much detail: not least the intriguing way in which David turns around. Amazing! This would have been terrific as a still image, but as an animation it's a knoclout. What a fantastic job! Now that pigeons have been officially banned from Trafalgar Square (I know, I know, blame the mayor) it's good to see katew commemorating the days of their supremacy. Even if there does seem to be a member of the public who's not too happy about it all... Great work, everyone. |

Thanks, Mr. Caplin. My error is obvious now. Your correction really does make a difference. No comments on last weeks late post due to the site being down for some of us? Neil _________________ "I haven't failed.... I've found 10,000 ways that don't work!" Thomas Edison |

Thanks Steve for not mentioning how poor my statue came out. I think I'll stick to wooden things! Maybe I could carve you a totem pole! Hey, there's an idea! _________________ Steve Mac |

Thank you for your comments Steve, The blood was originally mustard! I used the 'Eat Me' hot dog tutorial in the 3rd edition of your book as a guide. The croc is actually a komodo dragon. It was going to have wings to turn it into the expected fantasy beast, but I ran out of time. Sincerely, Philip |
