Yes, Steve, your cartoon image is great. Can you give us a quick explanation on how you did it, if you don't mind? _________________ "I haven't failed.... I've found 10,000 ways that don't work!" Thomas Edison |

Re: Contest 154: Cartoon faces
I'm not sure if I cheated or not but I didn't use any filters. I tried experimenting with them for about an hour and got nowhere so I just put the girl on a seperate layer, turned off the original layer for clarity, faded her out enough so I could see her outline and used a solid black 4 pixel brush to outline her. I drew the outlines on different layers (in blue) to separate them so I could paint under the lines without having to paint inside them. I also made separate paint fill layers (in red) so I could paint those layers without having to worry about painting over other colors. (ie: the hair layer is on top so when I painted in the shirt I could actually paint past the hair layer but not paint over it) I hope this made sense. I have no plan of attack on any given week. I'm still trying to figure it out myself!! Helpful hint: don't have two cups of coffee and then try to outline a picture. It's sort of like drinking and driving! _________________ Steve Mac |

Well we must think alike, because thats what I basicly did. I couldn't find a filter that was even close to "toonlike" So I just used the form of the face. Neil _________________ "I haven't failed.... I've found 10,000 ways that don't work!" Thomas Edison |

Most of the tutorials on the web are a bit disappointing too! Here's my attempt at a 'political cartoon' |

Re: Contest 154: Cartoon faces
Never thought of that..cheers Wayne:-) Of course,..erm.... as you probably guessed straight away, I was trying to achieve what a cartoon would have looked like in DaVinci's time....... I do like yours a lot....did you liquify it and then handdraw? (oh..that doesn't sound like proper English..but you what Imean.) |

Re: Contest 154: Cartoon faces
Liquify filter, yes, but the rest was a 'sketch' effect combined with the 'blur > average' filter. I did hand draw a couple of lines around the mouth and chin where the sketch effect didn't pick up any detail. It does seem to be necessary to do some hand drawing for a decent cartoon effect. Maybe I'll try another! |

Thanks Wayne. Yes, I did some stuff with the average blur filter too. Never used it before as far as I can remember. |

Thanks Anna, for the welcome and the advice. I am so new to this; the forum, photoshop, and trying to figure out how to send an image. You suggested a size of 102 KB, where do I set this? Thank you. Abby-Helen |

Re: Contest 154: Cartoon faces
Hi Abby-Helen, welcome to the group To get your image below 100K: Use 'Save for Web' feature (File > Save For Web) In the Save for Web dialog, make sure the 'Optimised' tab is clicked. Look below your image and you will see the current image size on the left. To the right of the image is a 'Quality' slider. As you adjust this, you will see your image size alter. Just slide it to the left until your image size gets below 100K Click on 'Save' and give the image a name. |
