When I started this I really didn't appreciate quite how long it was going to take. Two point perspective and a chess game is not fun! And yes I know the board is the wrong way round! |

Re: Contest 155: This sporting life
Well I struggled to think of an idea for days, finally hit on the 'chess game' idea and started an image late last night. (I was going to do a kind of disembodied 'hand of god' moving a piece) I wasn't particularly happy with it, and was going to give it another go tonight, until I saw your post Deborah. Now I don't think I will! You've done a great job, well done. |

Re: Contest 155: This sporting life
First in the arena this week was stefan, with a hard act to follow: a stunning arrangement of crumbling buildings and battling dinosaurs. What's particularly good here is the dusty light that fills the scene: there's a unified range of colour and tone that really ties all the well-chosen elements together. Excellent work, Stefan. Hi-liter's game of Pong is a funny and clever solution. It's the obvious choice, really, since Pong was effectively the first computer tennis game. An intriguing entry from new member Kayla, who's distorted that tower of books so that they loom over the tiny figure on the blackboard. It's a dark scene, full of foreboding, helped along by that doomy sky. Mind you, with summer reading like the titles you have there, I'd be overwhelmed too... welcome to the forum, Kayla - this is really good work. A touch of genius from tooquilos, with an animation showing a typical day at Wimbledon being rained off. Really funnywork, excellent rain and lightning effects - and I love the way the tennis players dance around the court. Brilliant. And the lighting and fireworks in the second entry are a great addition. I really like the idea of mountaineering becoming a spectator sport - and Meltonian has placed his mountain neatly in the scene, with a well judged scoreboard (the shadows of the legs really make it, and the shading on the side is good) and a neatly rippled sign towed behind the plane. The plane even has a shadow on the mountain - good detail! Once again, michael sinclair veers off into a photo of his own, with John McEnroe literally exploding with rage. You talk about selecting the foreground crowd with the Pen tool, Michael, and I can see why it would take so long: in cases like this, I'd go for a hard-edged brush and QuickMask every time. Curious, though - why didn't you do this piece as an animation? We've had several posts from Licarly featuring Transformers, which are clearly something of an obsession. It's a good idea, and the ground surface is a very good texture. But you need to watch those perspective angles: we're clearly looking up at the Transformer, but the shape of the roof shows us to be located at the top of the stadium. In which case, he needs to be a lot taller. Tricky one, perspective! A fine set of marble cubes from 2bfree, with Forum members adorning each face. And all done with the Vanishing Point filter, eh? A good use for it! And as to your point about the shadow: as it is, it makes the plinth appear to be floating. You need a deeper shadow, that's clearly cast by the side of the plinth and not sitting beneath it. Dirtdoctor23 (what happened to the other 22, I wonder?) has given us a stunning image of Gulliver strapped down on the ground, his legs disappearing off into the - no, hang on, they aren't going into the walkway, they've been cut off by the edge of the seating. Odd choice: why didn't you continue them off the left side of the image? A very classy new roof, though. A very neatly merged image from zilwow, with a well-chosen shot of a woman in a bath whose perspective fits the scene nicely. I really like the way she's leaning back against the crowd: perhaps a touch of shadow needed behind her? And please, post your entries to the forum directly: the blog.sina.com.cn page takes forever to load! Well, it was his idea, so it's not surprising that Eggbox is getting all clever on us. We see the diver falling into the pool, in close-up on the camera viewer, and again on the giant screens around the arena. The water fits perfectly in there, Ted - although I would have liked to see some reflection of the crowd. I love the subtlety of the cannon, it took me a while to spot that! Nice work from james, with a jousting scene in which the horseman charges out of the frame towards us. Now if it was me, I'd have flipped the horse's legs in alternate frames so that they appeared to be galloping... just an idea. The crowd don't seem too bothered by being trampled upon. A very neat job from steve hill, who's managed to distort a model car circuit to fit perfectly within our tennis court. It must have taken some doing: this isn't a trivial transformation. The track itself looks fine, Steve, but you do need to watch what happens to the cars in these situations: they've become rather flattened and elongated in the process. Best to treat them separately, or even drop in new cars afterwards. A painterly, evocative scene from vibeke, with a very Italian flavour in the horses, background and colours. Great textures in here, and a good sense of action: this style is an interesting departure for you, and one I think you should explore more. A great idea from katew, with the Space Shuttle blasting off from the centre court. Shouldn't that smoke be spilling over into the crowd more, though? It does seem to be rather vertical. Unless the crowd are holding it there by sheer will power, of course. A great gag from Ben Mills, with the chap from Monsters Inc (can't remember his name) appearing in a beam of light. And it's the lighting that really makes this scene: there's an eerie glow over the whole stadium that's been beautifully achieved. A real labour of love from Deborah Morley: arranging all those chess pieces must have taken forever. And made all the more difficult, of course, by the choice to leave the taken pieces on the pitch, rather than hiding them away indoors. A tremendous piece of work - but I'd really tone down those spotlights, which rather spoil the image. Fade them out towards the chess pieces with a Gradient on a layer mask. A great idea from celosia, turning the court into a Quidditch game. All the elements are there - the hoops, the hard ball thing (bludger? something like that) and, of course, HP and the gang on their broomsticks. In a case like this, Helen, I'd bring one character right up to the foreground to provide a solid focus for the image: perhaps old scarface himself, reaching for a Golden Snitch? A really funny idea from Tom - the giant ball swamping the centre court. A great cutout on the ball, with all that fiddly, fuzzy edge preserved - great work. And shadow that matches the lighting on the ball, as well! |
