Re: Contest 161: Reflection exercise
I wonder where the light is coming from because we are all putting the reflections in the same place.

Also will the water be blue or green ?

As the Caplin Family eagerly arrive at their skiing destination..a sinking feeling overcomes Steve.

He realises the Concierge at the hotel they were staying at made a terrible mistake with their booking.

He then kicks the dirt, mutters a few choice words and curses himself for forgetting his English/French dictionary at home

12 Noon, if you look at the side of the boat about half way down there is a slight shadow. That gives a good indication of the light direction.

Kate I'm impressed with your realistic water reflection/ambiance : it doesn't look fake!

Thanks Michael!

Re: Contest 161: Reflection exercise

Thanks to Steve Mac for the water. Didn't put quite as much effort into the trees at the water's edge as Maltonion, and thlight on the water's surface is coming from the wrong direction!. Would there be a reflection of the trees in the water at this distance, or just a shadow? Also, how do you upload these nice big images? I keep being told the file is too big.

I couldn't find any that were suitable, so I made the water myself in Photoshop. I saw a technique in Digital Photo magazine a few weeks back and used that - basically you just fill a blank document with monochrome noise, emboss it a bit, then stretch it (quite a lot!) in perspective. After that I just laid a gradient over the top to give the desired lighting effect.

Hi Meltonian
I was really afraid you were going to say that. Excellent job. I saw the same article - didn't turn out as good as yours, tho'!

This was a tough one!
Graham (Meltonian) I thought that was real water, I shall have to give your technique a try.

Re: Contest 161: Reflection exercise
Chris most of us use Photobucket.com: an image-hosting site, and you can post your images up to 1mb for free.

Once your image (after registering your account) is uploaded to their site, click on the bottom line ( the fourth underneath your image) called image Code to automatically copy your image, and then click Paste on the relevant forum on this site.

Finally, one more thing to do, and that is change the capital IMG into lower case img.
