What a dump! It needs brightening up!

I'm not at liberty to reveal the identity of my model.

Re: Contest 162: Angle of view
Here is my effort, the bar is populated with people I snapped in Singapore, after seeing the challenge. Except for the barman, who I found on the net.

Quiet in here tonight ...

A bit basic this week, I'm afraid, as I've not been too well.

Think I'm going to have to give it a miss this week, I'm so tired, and so's my computer, and I don't feel up to fighting with it this week... I hope to have a go at this challenge though, when I have the time and energy.

Re: Contest 162: Angle of view
Let me begin this week by congratulating all of you who took part. This was a difficult Challenge, and the standard of entries has been consistently high. What's interesting, though, is the variety of sources: some of you photographed people or models, some used Poser, some Googled them. But what great results!

First up the ladder was chris berry, with a highly accomplished piece of work that really set the tone for the week. It's not just the angles or placement, excellent though it is - the architects leaning over their blueprints, the woman tucked behind the chair, the dog asleep on the floor - but the colouring of all the added elements, a perfect match for the original photograph. My only slight observation is that the scooter's a little too small - but it's the perfect French runabout. Chris, you've really excelled yourself this time, which means it's well overdue time for a title. Based on this week's entry, I think Overhead Overlord seems appropriate.

The approach from tooquilos was to photograph Barbie dolls and place them in the scene - a very good solution. The pair playing cards work beautifully, detailed even down to the lighting on the Ken facing us. The added coins and cups are a great touch, but most subtle of all is the two Bar Bie logos - one on the table, one on the front of the bar. Perfectly in keeping with the period - sheer genius!

A Poser approach from GKB, with a variety of clothing styles and body types to ring the changes. Those beer glasses fit the hands well (although the two at the back are leaning forward rather perilously). The dogs and cat add fun to the scene, as do the two books, and the distortion through the woman's glass is priceless. You need to watch those garish Poser colours, though, Gordon! And here's a tip: when applying elements such as text to shaded T-shirts, it can be hard to match the shading. So after distorting the text to fit, load up its selection then hide it, and make a new layer (using that selection) from the shirt. Now, when you add colour to it, the shading will match the original perfectly.

An off-the-wall entry from Tom: and there, beneath the table, is the one character, who's clearly been struck down by fate in one of its many guises. Stunning lighting throughout the scene, but especially on the whirl of light around the arrow, add tremendous life and interest here: and you've also cleaned up a rather noisy original photo. I love the way the light reflects off the laptop, as well: brilliant work.

Ben Mills must have Googled hard to find so many appropriate images - but they all work well, and I do like the idea of these guys sitting around waiting for the beer to arrive. Best of all is the couple right at the bottom, gazing up at the camera - a really clever touch. Are the two men sitting a little too small, do you think?

Plenty of interest from the participants in Neil O's entry - that's DirtDoctor as was, of course. I like the added Ouija board and the laptop, and the dog on the bar is a nice touch. Are the people just a little big, though? That man looks as if he'd break the chair next to him if he sat on it. The upside down woman at the front works particularly well, though - a good choice of angle.

Good angle matching from james, with some great touches: the kids doing their homework on either side of the table work particularly well, as does the newly cleared table itself. Best of all, of course, is the animated version, with some real tour de force moves: the girl drinking at the bar, the waving businessman, the two dogs on the left, the bartender moving cups around... very intriguing and subtle stuff!

Looks like more Poser work to me, from Steve Mac. Great choice of costume, fantastic poses - and some very good interaction between the characters. Plenty of added detail here, too: the guitar resting against the bar, carried drinks tray on the far right, the spilled bottle on the table - and Iove the way the waitress is trying to wake the passed-out customer. It's the tonal range, once again, that really makes this work so well: those colours are perfect matches for the original photo. Fantastic work.

Loads of added detail in Deborah Morley's entry: the cat on the table, the posters on the table, bar and the wall )and the two still rolled up on the table). There's something on the poster on the bar that looks to me like a deflated rubber chicken - am I misreading this? The real genius here, however, is the fact that we're seeing the scene from the spider's point of view: this is the only entry this week to place a foreground element right up close, and the cat's position makes perfect sense of it. Good to see those two men at the bar forming an orderly queue. Will the bartender be long?

Perfectly photographed toys from josephine harvatt, with some great gags in the captions. I particularly like the robot couple in the foreground, and the pose of the woman at the bar carries a lot of meaning. Again, toning down the colours to match the faded original really works well. Great stuff!

That man on the table sloshing petrol around in michael sinclair's entry looks, from the back, suspiciously like michael sinclair himself. I think we could have done with a couple more frames here: the match falling into the room, perhaps, and perhaps the flames more gradually taking over the scene. And shouldn't we see some petrol on the ground where it's been poured? Still wondering how you took that photo of yourself...

I know some of you go to great lengths to complete these Challenges, but Vibeke's decision to go all the way to Singapore just to shoot people from above shows serious attention to detail. Perfect placement of people in the scene - I especially like the girl with her back to us right at the bottom, and the man to her right fits very neatly into that chair. The bartender seems to be pouring his best wine into saucepans, though - can this be right? The added cutlery works well, and the woman top right gives a perfect impression of an uninterested waitress. A great piece of work.

A well chosen threesome in katew's entry, with subtle shadows that place them well into the scene. The man at the other table's a little too blue for the room, though: it's always worth checking after a break to make sure nothing jumps out of the screen at you. Sorry to hear you've not been well, Kate - hope you get right soon.

A fully populated scene from Meltonian: you say finding the images was challenging, and I'm sure it was - but all the figures here are at exactly the right angles, with some great interaction between them. My only real comment is that perhaps the people are all slightly on the large side; but then, they do fill the bar up nicely.

A very tricksy piece of distortion from 2bfree: I think there's a limit to how much people can be twisted around, Joe! There comes a point at which people turn into cardboard cutouts, looking unnaturally flattened. But the photographer and woman at the bar work well - and, as always, tucking the woman's legs behind the chair really places her firmly into the scene.

As I said at the beginning, there's been an astonishingly high quality of entries this week. Having gone through them in detail, I've been struck by the ability of all of you to read and match the perspective of the scene: there hasn't been a single instance in which the angle of the figures has been wrong (even 2bfree's distorted figures match the angle of view). Fantastic work, everyone: I don't think I've ever been more impressed.

Thank you for your comments Steve. A deflated rubber chicken? when I looked at the poster it does look a bit like that, but it is in fact part of the lady's dress!

Kate - I hope you overcome that one soon. A friend at work had it and she recovered fairly well.

So that's how folk here get their names! Thanks for investing me into the HTCIP circle!

Thanks for noticing the colour matching - that took more time than the perspective matching. I knew that scooter was too small - I think placing it behind the chair threw me off. Will try harder next time!

Thanks for as really enjoyable challenge - made me think hard about persepective.

Thanks Steve,
Nelson has only got one building with more than 2 stories, so I had to go further afield.
