srowden, I fully agree with you. The easiest way is not always the easiest to carry out. But the main thing is to participate and to use all the tricks to generate the image that we imagine. I await impatiently next Friday ! |

Re: Contest 170: The witching hour
Some very imaginative entries this week. One thing I would like to point out, though: Margaret Hamilton wasn't really a witch. I know this may come as something of a shock to some of you, but I suspect that nose and chin are prosthetic. Taking her makeup off isn't enough - the fake add-ons have to go too! First to climb out of the pumpkin this week was GKB, with a recoloured Hamilton and a rather neatly tweaked Dorothy. But watch those greens, Gordon: it's a colour that can all too easily look unnatural and over bright. The new hat's a good addition. (Interesting point in the subsequent post, though - the instruction "disregard this post". How on earth are we supposed to comply with this request?) Cleverly swapped faces from Dek_101, with the witch and Dorothy's heads swapped over - and the slightest animation in the eyes. Again, though - fix Margaret Hamilton's chin and nose! Some very detailed work from new member Claude37, who has transposed the hair and hat - as well as building a fantastic witch's face for Dorothy, and restoring Hamilton to her original form. The colouring and texture on both faces is well judged, and finding a new hand was a good touch here, too. Bienvenue sur le site, Claude. I know it's slightly off-topic, but do take a look at hi-liter's entry to a different contest: really excellent work here, in terms of texture, style and uniformity. Beautiful! Rather subtle work from CharlotteBabb, with a devilishly reformed Dorothy - great expression and a fantastic profile here. I like the overall recolouring of the scene as well, which gives it a great consistency. But you do want to avoid your image appearing too soft: with so much detail in the hair, we need a little more in the faces. A glorious animation from tooquilos - I love the way the hand is tweaking the gargoyle nose. Very entertaining work, as always, Anna: my only slight quibble is that the face of Dorothy is a slightly awkward fit beneath the hat at the end... but I really enjoyed this one. A very neat twist on the theme from maiden - Oil of Ugly indeed, a great touch! And slotting the bottle into that hand makes perfect sense of the pose. Very neatly rebuilt faces, too - Hamilton looks much better with this nose and chin. Rather a harsh cutout to Dorothy's hair, though; a little finger smudging needed here? Good to have you back on a regular basis, Becky. So Ben Mills is the first to track down a picture of Margaret Hamilton from another movie - a good idea, but a shame about the resolution! I like Dorothy's new clothes, though, and her green make-up works a treat (although perhaps it shouldn't have gone into her eyes). Clever work, indeed, from Elliott: rather than rebuilding the faces, he's reflected them in inversed positions. Placing both characters on the same side works surprisingly well, and most of us would have been tempted to simply flip the image for the reflection. But finding head-on shots of the two characters is a far more ingenious solution. With the distortion, and the bevel around the edge of the circular mirror, this is a really well thought-out and meticulous piece of work - and certainly good enough to earn you a title, Elliott. So, let me see... on the basis of this one, I think Mirror Magician best fits the bill. Excellent stuff! Glorious new hair for the White Witch from vibeke, complete with a pink gown and, er, a pink rhinestone hat. Very neatly rebuilt profile, as well, and Dorothy's new clothes suit her perfectly. But watch the colouring on Dorothy's skin: that green is just too bright to exist in real life, or even in a fantasy movie. This is a tricky one to get right! Interestingly swapped faces from Neil O: but with the extra remodelling, it's hard to recognize Dorothy in there (although, curiously, Hamilton can still just about be made out). But the blending between the faces is seamless! An entertaining scene from loonybox, with a crackling, lightning and fog filled environment with added broomstick. The rebuilt faces are nicely exaggerated, and the colour restraint makes the whole image tie together nicely. Wizard of Oz meets Friday 13th with a touch of Hannibal Lecter in xboxmaniac's entry - I don't think we'll ever see hockey masks in the same way again. Hard to read quite what's happening here: is the witch about to slice off Dorothy's wart? In which case, best of luck to her for providing this service. Plenty of menace here, but you need to take another look at hands! A nice animated transformation from james - love the bat and Dorothy's waggling nose and chin. A couple more stages in the transformation would have helped here - but of course, this would have entailed an awful lot more work... An excellent mask for Dorothy from BigVern, and the new clothes work well on the witch. Her face does seem rather odd, though, wouldn't you say? Just a little too rounded? I like the glass case in the background - is that a stuffed bat? So I've finally figured out how to tempt Glen back to the forum - give him plenty of opportunity for blood and gore. The transposition of faces is disgustingly messy, but you do have to admire that neat stitching. Is each stitch hand drawn, or did you have a clever method here? The gothic scissors fit perfectly into that hand, too. Wonderfully revolting, Glen. Witch Hazel! Ha ha! Finally got the gag in Eggbox's entry. The recoloured Hamilton is good (although her chin and nose...) and I like the Smurfed Dorothy. A touch too blue for reality, perhaps. But I really like the second entry - an ingenious solution, and the transformation is beautifully realised. Very neat work, Ted. A cleverly rebuilt Hamilton from chris berry - but has Dorothy joined Kiss? The streak of white in the hair, as seen in Bride of Frankenstein, is a cool touch here. An ingeniously fitted Hogwarts uniform from fngirl, and a neatly recoloured witch - but fix that chin and nose! Of course, we can see why a Harry Potter fan would be attracted by the witch concept - and this is a very neat solution! We need the dark glasses on for Abby-Helen Artfield's entry - such bright colours! Tone down that green before my monitor implodes! A nicely rebuilt Hamilton, but seriously, you do need to be careful of over-saturation. A pointy-nosed Dorothy from srowden, and the recolouring on the witch is good - but I think she could do with a new hairdo as well. When recolouring Dorothy, though, be sure not to get green paint in her mouth! A very entertaining entry from Brian Ruddock: the ther Oz characters appear nicely on the collar, and that's the wackiest transformation of Dorothy this week. Excellent recolouring of Hamilton, too, with special attention to the blush on the cheeks (but nose, chin as above). Like the bats! Nice work from katew, who's rebuilt Hamilton's face with some sensitivity (although the chin may be a touch small, now). The new hand is great, though, and Dorothy does make a rather dumpy witch! Clever stuff indeed from Deborah Morley: is that Judy Garland in later life? There is a touch of Liza Minelli in there, certainly. Good to see Hamilton's ear back (but nose, chin etc) and I like the overall feel of this one. Painstaking rebuilding of Hamilton's face from Brian Garrison - she looks almost childlike here; perhaps her nose is slightly too reduced. But that's certainly a truly evil-looking Dorothy! Excellent work, folks. Hope you had fun with this one. |

Re: Contest 170: The witching hour
Good morning Steve, Yes I looked at the shade of green and thought 'hmmm, that doesn't look natural' but then I thought 'just what shade of green does look natural on a human being?' The 'disregard this post' was actually an accidental double post - sorry about that. A fun challenge. |
