Who better to play Cinderella than Wyeth's Christina . . . although Wikipedia states that it was Wyeth's wife who posed for the painting.

No perspective on this one...I do like being a fairy godmother.

This turned out to be a lot more fun than I had expected.

Re: Contest 179: Panto season
There have been some really nice entries this week. I think your poster is great Vibeke, it looks really professional, the lighting on all the component images is spot on.

I also really like Steve Mac's poster and Brewell's entry is great - I can learn a lot from it as it shows you don't need a huge amount going on in a picture to create a really powerful image.

I won't get time to submit anything this week, but hopefully will have chance to have a stab at the next one.

Vibeke,

Hooray!!! I get to be in a Pantomime!

Errrmmm, can I just ask which part I'm playing? On second thoughts it's probably best you don't answer that one.

Re: Contest 179: Panto season
Not an easy Challenge this week. The horror of the blank page makes it that much harder to get started: but we've seen some inspired designs nonetheless.

First to enter the fray was james, with a Disneyesque entry that mixes cartoon Cinderellas with a real Prince Charming's hand and glass slipper. I like the intriguing text style, James, but I wonder about the poster layout: everything of interest is crowded together at the top, and the lower half is mainly skirt. Perhaps the title could have gone down here so as not to interrupt the slipper?

Thoroughly inspired work from Steve Mac, with a dazzlingly professional poster that uses a split technique to highlight the difference between the glamour of the ball (the prince, the castle, the slipper) and the drudgery of everyday life (the excellent 'ugly' sisters, the floor mopping. And the clock really sets it off: such extra elements as the black hand print and the tape really add to the overall effect. Fantastic work, Steve!

A wonderful Bollywood interpretation from tooquilos, with fantastic ugly sisters and a touch of real genius in casting Rowan Atkinson - complete with rolled up trouser leg - as the slipper-wearing Prince. A very coherent poster, too, and the graphic style of the word 'bolly' is thoroughly appropriate. Excellent.

Sometimes simplicity wins out - and Chris Berry's entry combines the slipper with the clock (and a couple of sprinklings of fairy dust) to make an intriguing, professional entry. Using the moon as the C in Cinderella is a great idea - but wouldn't it have been better if it was a half moon? Great edgy choice of lettering at the bottom, with the slight curvature accentuated by the reflection.

Very tasty work from brewell, which plays on our understanding of the story: there's the castle where the ball's to be held, and we know that the sparkling dust will soon change the pumpkin into a coach, and the mouse into a footman. A very expectant tilt to the pumpkin, and a beautifully inquisitive mouse. I particularly like the bevel treatment on the word Cinderella - a very interesting effect. Overall a very professional, convincing poster.

Neil O has done for Cinders what West Side Story did for Romeo and Juliet: a very contemporary updating, certainly. An interesting mix of text styles here: is that your own rendering of Cinderella? If so, it's most accomplished! But I'd like to have seen a few of the key characters here - Cinders, the ugly sisters, Prince Charming... Overall, though, it's a coherent and impressive poster.

A fantastic choice of font from katew, topping off a professional, skilled entry. I do like Marlon Brando as the Fairy Godfather - a great choice! So what's the font you used? I don't recognise it, but I think it's one I need in my archives. One thing about the swirling stars: I assume you've made a custom brush to paint these. Add a little random rotation to the mix for a less regulated effect. Great work!

Am I supposed to recognise my own features worked into michael sinclair's poster? I'm not sure I'm the best model for a female lead... I like the way it's integrated into the two scenes (great curvature on the second entry), and the slipper on the platform is a good idea. But that's the wrong way to do the shadow, Michael! Did you run out of time?

A clever interpretation from Abby-Helen Artfield, who's skillfully taken Cinders from a painting by Andrew Wyeth and combined it with a magical staircase within the glass slipper itself. This image sums up the whole story perfectly: and placing Cinderella right at the bottom gives the distant castle an unreachable feel. A good stab at a reflection - but the front of the shoe would have been easier if you hadn't flipped it vertically, just used the thick rim directly below. There's something intriguing about the blurry fairy dust, too: nice work!

A bit of a tabloid entry from eggbox, who's dug up a distinctly adult Cinderella to play the lead. I get the broom, but what's the boot doing? Other than crushing the irritatingly smug ballet dancers? I do like the stocking hanging next to the glass slipper (some very neat transparency there), but this looks like a very rough production!

A classical version of the panto from Ben Mills, with a very Victorian-looking Cinderella. Isn't she a little young to be marrying Prince Charming, though? And I see your Glass Slipper has taken on a snakeskin flavour! I like the tonal consistency of the slipper, the coach and the castle, but the squared-up portrait seems a little detached: fading the top and left edges out would have helped a lot, I feel.

Excellent work from ziiwow, whose oriental version gives us a magical, bubbly Cinderella lettering, very convincing ugly sisters (in last week's setting), and a beautifully created glass slipper in a wonderfully well lit scene. And is that a real foot? It's perfect for the scene. Great work, ziiwow!

Charlotte Babb has cast herself as the fairy godmother - and very good she looks in the part, too. It's a rather psychedelic approach, combining the 1950s automotive font of the title with a 1970s wacky background. I like the overall feel, but must take you to task on the subtitle: lose all those capitals! They're not needed!

A fun-packed evening out is promised by vibeke, whose lavish production includes ballet dancers and a white-faced clown. It's a very enticing poster, with the muted tones of the smaller elements really drawing us into the castle in the centre. I particularly like the flowery path, which ties the elements together, and the glowing purple stars: and with a cast like that, how can the show possibly fail?

Great work, everyone. I think it's useful for us to look at graphic rather than merely photographic work every now and again: it helps us to stretch our typographic and design muscles.

Thank you Steve. I enjoyed doing this one.

Yea, India has been at the forefront of my mind last couple of months. My son has been backpacking there and has ended up in a Delhi hospital for 10 days now with dysentry and pneumonia. With any luck he will be coming home Saturday or Sunday once he is given the all clear.

Re: Contest 179: Panto season
Thanks Steve. The font's called Harrington. I don't know who it's by, as it was on my computer when I got it.

The stars were made in two ways: the pale ones were a brush which, I think, came with the Photoshop 7 Wow Book, and the brighter ones were a custom shape. So I could have rotated the brighter ones, I think.

Thanks Steve. I certainly wouldn't mind doing more layout challenges, especially learning which fonts work and don't work.
Hope you are feeling better.

Thank you Steve, this poster was true fun. I can see what you mean about the reflection.
I too, would love to see more of poster design, etc., on the Fri Challenge. It's inspirational to see other member's work.

Anna, I hope your son is okay.

I really look forward to coming home from work on Friday and checking the results of the challenge.
Thanks for mentioning the lettering. I made a couple of layers of the text in colors and moved them around through a mask 'til they looked shadowlike. Snipped out a few stray tails, filled in a few odd gaps &
VOILA ! Interesting letterage.

And Xiggy, thanks for the shout out.
Christina as Cinderella is inspired.

Thanks Steve, No not my rendering of Cinderella, although I did alter it to suite the poster. After all, didn't you teach us to Cheat in Photoshop?
