Rich This is great fun and a beautifully colourful piece of work and I love that rabbit. I would however question whether the chess piece reflections would skew like that? Nick |

You may be right. I should do a test and visually check. Thanks |

Test done and you are correct. There is an ever so slight pointing toward the viewers eye but no where near what I assumed. That's exactly where one can get into trouble, assuming without actually looking. Great catch and Thanks! |

Couldn't see a use for this but a bit of research and it looks like it is not an original idea. Looks like old Leonardo got there first ![]() |

Contest 190: Dextre helps out
It's been a busy week but wanted to submit something, a bit unimaginative I know, and there are a few bits I am not happy with in my composition, but it's just gone midnight and time to catch up on some sleep. p.s Some great ideas this week guys. I'll need to curb my enthusiasm for the next one and make it simpler. It was fun. ![]() |

Re: Contest 190: Dextre helps out
The tricky part this week lay in isolating the robot from the background - and getting rid of all those little red arrows on it. Or not, as mguyer demonstrated. Is that, indeed, Mrs G? Whatever will she think when she sees this? A great robot hairdresser from Ben Mills, complete with comb and scissors. Let’s hope it doesn’t, you know, slip or anything. We’d have to see a nasty accident here. I laughed out loud at brewell’s entry - funny how you can not notice something obvious until it’s pointed out to you. And a great job cleaning up the image, too. A splendid animation from tooquilos, with a perfectly muddied Jeep to begin with. But do we really need the sheet? I’m sure those bots could have finished the job in plain view... Josephine Harvatt has given us an excellent retro advertisement, with accessories that are perfectly in keeping with the period - the phonograph, the cocktail shaker, even the cigarette lighter now speak of earlier days. Where do you find all these old images? Are they all Googled? The robot in Eva Roth’s entry is neatly entangled with the wool - and that strand itself has been well drawn into the image (love the way it wraps around the cat’s paw). My only problem is with the shadow beneath the robot: as the machine is standing vertically, so it appears, the shadow shouldn’t make it look like it’s lying down. It seems katew needs a back rub - but frankly, would you trust this rub-bot to do the job adequately? Mind you, that does seem to be an awfully human hand it has there. An excellent remote control, particularly the arrow directional keys! One of the best GIF animations ever comes from James - the bending of the robot arms, the construction process, and the way the figure walks towards us are all excellent. This must have taken an age to do! Amazing work, James. But I wish it could sit down - longing to see it playing those bongos in the second entry. Detailed and painstaking work from Mick Malkemus, and it’s certainly paid off: this is as near perfect an artist’s impression as we could hope for. The contrast, the light flares, the added shadows and the angle of view all match the scene immaculately. I don’t usually hand out custom titles this early in a new member’s ‘career’ on this site, but frankly this is such an outstanding job I can’t let it go unrewarded. And I don’t think I can do better than Josephine Harvatt’s suggestion of Meticulous Manipulator. Truly fantastic work, Mick! A new member this week - and mariong has given us a partying robot in full swing. It’s an excellent piece of work, with added spotlights, lasers, video screens and even a disco ball head. Love the partying spacemen in the distance! A really funny, classy first entry that shows a lot of skill and imagination. We expect great things from you, Marion - welcome to the forum! Surreal stuff indeed from RichSchneider, with an Alice in Wonderland inspired entry. Great rendered chess pieces, with a good reflection in each. The rabbit also reflects well on the board, but the reflections of those chess pieces should be truly vertical - not at a slant! And if it were me, I’d have smudged out that rabbit fur with the Smudge tool, rather than leaving it fuzzy. Still, it’s an intriguing and beautiful image to look at. A great trio of robots from Ellen. The robot has been expertly treated and toned to match the background scene, which is a far from trivial task: only the angle jars a little. Please don’t feel ‘outclassed’ - that’s absolutely not what the forum is all about. We’re concerned with your own personal Photoshop development, not in competing with others. The aim is to accomplish the project you set yourself to the best of your ability, and you’ve turned in an excellent job! A mound of robots gone haywire from michael sinclair - great colour matching, making them largely indistinguishable from the complex background, creating a real sense of chaos. Mo only problem here is with the robot on the far left, whose base seems to fade away into nothing... a bit more junk needed in front of it, perhaps? Gorgeous and inspired work from salfordnurse -the idea of turning the image into a Leonardo drawing is an excellent one. A great scroll, with the quill adding a three-dimensional feel to the piece - very tasty indeed. But what really makes it for me is the backwards ‘Photoshop’ at the top, recognizing Leonardo’s habit of mirror writing. Seems a second title of the week is due for this wonderful piece of work - and I think it has to be Intensive Illustrator. Inspired stuff! I love the cartoon feel to vibeke’s work - and what a great range of accessories. I get the hair dryer, the brush, the bottle, the broom, the frying pan, the lipstick, the handbag - but what on earth is that thing sticking out the front? And does the presence of a Canon digital SLR suggest that this is actually you??? A little gruesome, certainly - but the hidden skill in Meltonian’s entry has been to rebuild the body behind where the original arm was removed. A beautifully accomplished, expert piece of work, with the angle of the robot arm fitting perfectly into the montage. A fine planet from Gavin, and the tinting on the robot matches it well. Was this planet drawn in Photoshop? A great technique, if so. My only issue here is with the space dust swirling around: there seems so much of it that it’s making the whole image a little low contrast. Perhaps the robot should be sticking out of the top of the dust cloud? Great surrealism from Cedarmoon, with a robot nanny manipulating six babies at once. The addition lf the human hands is a really thoughtful touch, and the space-themed posters on the wall are a nice addition. But you need to watch your overall perspective: the posters don’t follow the angle of the wall, and some of the babies seem rather out of scale with each other. Love the twin bottles strapped to the robot, though. A very entertaining week all round! |

A shame, because it matches the shirt in your avatar perfectly. A mirror, yes, of course. Stupid of me! |

Re: Contest 190: Dextre helps out
Thanks Steve, Your are right about the mist, and I think I would of liked to of done a better job with the dextre. As for the planet and stars backdrop, I made it up from scratch and took under 5 mins, it's a really good way of making planets. I just made a circle filled it with black, render clouds x3, adj levels, spherize 100% and then a further 50%, changed colour balance, thats all in a nutshell! You must love your job, going to all these beautiful places too. |
