Re: Contest 201: The empty glass mystery
Steve, apologies I've thought about this again and made some minor amends. I was not happy with the left edge of the glass, it was too see-through. Also, I think you would probably see some of the table through the base. Also, unless the glass is very high quality, the imperfection would create distortion, so I've added some more ripple. This may be wrong though as I guess you have high quality glasses. Nick |

Here is my 2nd attempt ... sorry Steve. Now put the glass in the approximate correct position I hope thanks to Nick Curtain's eagle eyes. I like the really beautiful glass effects produced by Tooquilos and Maja. |

Agree Vern, they have managed to create a wonderful effect and the sparkle on Michael's glass is a lovely touch. Now, it's very possible that I could be held accountable for your placement of the glass, if it turns out to be in the wrong place and I'll deny all knowledge of and dialogue between us! Joking apart though, members planning to approach this one may wish to look at the depth of field in the table image. There would seem to be an optimum focus spot where Vern has placed his glass, which is, of course, in focus. Let's see what happens Friday. Nick |

Visual clues?
Anyone else think so? Look closely at that vertical cue on the right side (There are not two vertical cues, but one). The green towards the left, and the 'metal' flange deeply buried in the far left. I think when I see the original photo, I might turn Let's solve this mystery together! (Love the theme Anna...) Nick, the DOF clue is clear now that you mention it. The glass must lie along that focal plane. Good detective work Holmes... If I interpret you correctly, Vern has placed his glass in the correct focal plane. I have to disagree. The glass must be placed starting from the bottom front point (where that writing underneath the glass is) of the glass. I know that I am wrong in the way the glass actually looks. 3D imaging tells me that many others got that one much closer than I did. In placement, the vertical reflection clue, as with Anna on the right, and mine on the left, appears compelling. One of us is probably most correct in placement. (Then again, if that reflection is one of the emanating spokes, then Vern, Vibeke, or Maya are closer to correct placement.) Anna makes an interesting comment about physics also; according to changing light conditions, it may not be possible to get the refractive qualities exactly like the original photo. I'll be very surprised if anyone nails the refractive qualities. |

It is a mystery- think I'll sneak off to put some vodka in Vibeke's inviting OJ and wait for the original. |

Re: Contest 201: The empty glass mystery
Thank you Vern and Mick for your comments. What appeared to be quite an innocuous challenge has ended up really difficult. I cant wait to see the original pic. Ive taken pics of my own glass on a table outside but depending on time of day, amount of sunlight etc..it would produce different refractions and shadows. |

Hi Katherine, Welcome to the forum. Love the shadow you created Thank you Vern. I must have been a curios sight - staring and squinting at glasses all day. |

Usually I shy away from anything technical but I thought that I would give it a go. I have to say I have not done anything like the research that everyone else seems to have done - slacker that I am so hope that mine will pass with a push. _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |
