Re: Contest 213: Ocean voyage
Thanks Ellen, I love your happy couple.

It would seem that The Owl and the Pussycat have been a hit with the panel this week. I suspect it is they who have drawn attention, rather than my work, but Google must take the credit for them. To think they nearly hit the recycle bin!

Bruce referred to the technique, so I thought you may be interested in how to achieve a very quick drawing effect, as per the one I used. You can use 'Find Edges', but I prefer this:

- Open source image.
- Adjust levels if appropriate.
- Copy the background layer and desaturate CTRL / SHIFT U
- Copy the copy layer and invert CTRL I
- Change the blend mode to Colour Dodge
- The image should go white, but this does not always happen completely.
- Apply Gaussian Blur at a very low setting to the inverted layer and then adjust to suit in the live dialouge
- In the O&P ferry image, I applied a Hue & Sat adjustment layer with a sepia colourise effect and adjusted Curves to match the contrast of the ferry and the figures.

A great effect can be achieved by skipping the last step and duplicating the background layer and placing it on the top of the stack. Change the blend mode to Soft Light / Vivid Light, which will bring back some colour. Just experiment and see what you can create.

I hope this is useful

Nick

Thank you Gordon.

Nick, yes it does take hours. The actual animation doesnt take that long but preparing each frame with the various movements - does! I visualise the entire sequence in my head then go ahead and put it into practice.

It's Labor Day Weekend - America goes boating one last time.

Nick, thanks for the instructions. I couldn't figure out how you got those lines so fine and crisp. Well done.

There may be trouble ahead, but while there's moonlight, and music, and love, and romance - let's face the music ....

Josephine is that George Raft?
Stefan, I really like your posts. Do you do a high pass to get them looking like that?
Apologies, mine is another dancing one.

I suspect it isn't Mr Raft as the image is too contemporary - I love yours - some nifty shadows and colour work there.

Thanks for your splendid dancing couple, Josephine! What with all the moonlight and music and all they were still dancing when the cruise ship passed a lighthouse early this morning.

thanks Josephine. I just made the image a bit darker and less red. I l'm pleased to see I'm not the only one pinching bits from other images this week...
