Re: Contest 216: Water tower makeover
Hi Josephine My wish is that I had the artistic talent to create such a beautiful image, but Mr Google helped me find this one and I merely added the tower and a hint of mist. I made the picture 'pop' slightly by adding gaussian blur to a merged copy and changing the blend mode to Soft light at 50% opacity. 'Blend If' was applied to restore the shadow detail and the layer was then copied and the blend changed to Screen, with opacity reduced to around 20%. There are some truly wonderful images here this week, so congrats everyone. Nick |

Anna - no problem. With so many people taking part, it's inevitable that our brilliant minds will think of the same theme from time to time! Nick |

Re: Contest 216: Water tower makeover
A tremendous outpouring of creativity this week - fantastic to see, it's been a great pleasure looking through the entries. First in with an early entry was Gerard, who's blended the tower very neatly into one of the supports of Tower Bridge in London. A great choice, certainly, but the real skill the has been in the shading: look how well the shadows on the water tower match the original. Very nicely done. Tiny point: the underside of the overhang on the right should be a little more shaded than it is. Otherwise, excellent work. An interesting approach from The Mad Lep, with some nicely textured towers. There's a very strong perspective here, which would just about work - except the string of washing tied between them shows none of this perspective. Also, the first item on the left is overhanging the tower, despite the fact that the rest are going off in the other direction. Some good lighting in the second entry - I like the lit window - and the third entry is really funny. Great pose on the wolf! I enjoyed maiden's water-filled tower - especially the fact that it refracts the view seen through it. But couldn't we expect more distortion here? The bicycle-riding fish is priceless! A perfect fit from Paul2007, with the tower well integrated into the scene. The extra windows really do the job well here. But are the curves on the top of the original lighthouse a little too pronounced for the tower? Personally I'd have fired Ben Mills' architect for gross dereliction of civic duty - splitting a classical portico like that is criminal. But you have to admire the skill of the builder: the tower is beautifully blended into the house, and the new pagoda style roof is, well, an ... er... interesting stylistic addition. I particularly like the couple from the book in here, as well as the car from last week's Challenge (thoughtfully converted to left hand drive). The new windows fit perfectly: a great job, Ben. Our new member this week is R. Halaquist, with a tower that looks ready to withstand nuclear blats. I like the picture window and the glimpse of interior: there's a consistency of material here that works especially well. But you do need to watch the texture beneath the overhang: it needs to be distorted to splay out in this area. Welcome to the forum, Rodney! We know Steve Mac has been tied up writing his stair book, and it's clearly a subject that's much on his mind. The winding staircase, with its fantastic shadow, is truly beautiful here: perfectly integrated into the tower, this is a magnificent piece of work. And I love the new lakeside location. Do you think building could do with a window so they can admire the view? There's a definite Dutch feel to Vibeke's tower, with a great array of shuttered and decorative windows. A bit of a perspective issue here: the windows near the top of the column need to follow the angle of the brickwork, and indeed the brickwork could do with following the angle of the curve a little more - it curves up at the bottom, but I feel that as viewers we're on a level with the base. A spectacular view, with a great window to match! An interesting piece of remodelling from GKB, who's turned the tower into a table lamp - and most attractive it is, too. The shadow of the cable is particularly enjoyable. But I have a couple of issues here, Gordon. First, the lamp is definitely unstable - a bit of a fire hazard, I'd say. More significantly, though: why isn't the bulb attached to the base? Is it floating inside the shade? I enjoyed the Snoopy reference in the second entry - love the umbrella! I love brewell's idea that the Bush family will build a White House style portico around their new home. And why not? A great banner, and extra details like the windows and the cow add a lot of interest to this piece. Counting the days, eh, Bruce? A liquid-filled tower from gaoxiguo - and it's a fantastic piece of work. There's a real glass quality to the tower, and the texture of the beer works well. A little more distortion of the view through the glass would help, but overall this is a very good piece of work. Magical stuff from Nick Curtain; the tower fits in perfectly with this fantasy scene. Hard to see what's been added here without reference to the original image, but that's certainly not a criticism! Odd that a single tower should have two pinnacles, though. A gorgeous piece of work from Neal, with a wonderful array of textures in his makeshift rocket. It's the details that really make this - the porthole covers, the strapping around the tower, the reproduction of the shadow on the vent on the side. Good to have you back, Neal! Looks like Josephine Harvatt was a little peckish this week. Her gingerbread house is a tasty treat, with icing around the windows and oversized smarties (M&Ms?) glued to the outside. Enough to tempt any Hansel and Gretel wandering this far from home... Very subtle work from Neil O, incorporating the tower into a lighthouse. It's such a seamless job it's hard to tell what's been added here - but I suspect the original building wasn't divided in this way. I think we need to see the original for comparison! A splendid tower from mariong that's literally out of this world, nestling neatly into the alien landscape. It's a convincing construction, and the extra decoration here brings it a very appealing quality. The strong shadows really help the sense of place. So they're still getting back and forth in Space Shuttles, then? The window enclosure in srowden's tower has a strong 3D feel to it, and the concrete wall in front gives a good sense of distance. The windows are really needed over the other side, of course, where that plane looks to be taking off at a scarily steep angle. Would this evening sky cast such a strong shadow, though? An impressive golden tower from tooquilos, with Rapunzel blow drying her hair and the emergency hairdresser arriving to give her a hand. I'd like to have seen it end with those locks falling to the ground! A splendid setting, but you forgot to add in the reverse side of the dome (the underneath part). Great onlookers! Expert remodelling from James, with an attractively converted tower that looks good enough to live in. But of course, it's the animation that shows the real skill here. And there's so much detail this week: the spinning rotor blade, the hovering of the helicopter - complete with wavering shadow - and the brave attempt at making the man walk into the house. He doesn't stay long, though: but I do like the wave she gives him as he leaves! Some nice touches from katew: the window boxes, the satellite dish (with the van that's recently installed it), tge subtle glazing effect on the upper windows - and the happy couple being filmed standing in their doorway. The windows on the side, though, look a little awkward: shouldn't we see some perspective variation between the two? But it does look like a great place to live. A remote setting from mguyer, with the tower as an add-on to a rustic log cabin. Shame to compress it so much: I think a sky extension might have been in order here! I haven't seen Ellen's peace sign before - is that for real? What a great thing to maintain. And now, of course, they'll have a viewing tower to look at it from. Great new windows, and the dark shadow has been expertly removed. The spray of foliage at the bottom blends it in well. A rather splendid view from michael sinclair, the towers forming the base of some vast fantasy installation. Some impressive texturing here, although the strong perspective of the railing isn't matched by the towers: we should be looking up at them more, from this angle. The mixing of water and electricity does concern me, though. A most enjoyable week! |
