Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Does anyone know how to reduce the file size of a GIF file?
The file I created is too large.
You could send me a PM if you want so it doesn't take up space in this post.

Thanks

Steve I've sent you a PM with how to Optimise Gifs (including some spelling mistakes I'm sure you can forgive)

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
I've never tried an animation before and must admit to being a little scared to do so, perticularly with all the experts around here!. Therefore I'll bow out gracefully and just provide a still image. Hope you don't mind.

Great work so far

Nick

Great work Becky. I started doing mine and haven't even got near the animation yet, or get any other work done. Could you please send me the same message you sent Steve, or put them into the tutorials.
Merry Christmas.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
I've posted a Tutorial for Optimising GIFs most using Save to Web and Devices in Photoshop CS3 - but can be used for most GIF animation programs including ImageReady where I first learnt how to animate in Photoshop - however I think Lexus was barely out of nappies/diapers when I was first experimenting with GIF animations using my Amiga A1200 hooked up via Dial-up at 56kbp, but hat's off to you Lexus for gaining certification I know it's a tough artform to master

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Thanks Becky, I was hoping you had some new magic way.
I might give this one more go, if I get time, but I have a feeling I'll get carried away with Christmas.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
That's lovely Vibeke although at 97k you could have gotten away with a little less optimisation.

Unfortunately, Vibeke, despite all the new technology out there for designing wonderful animations: Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe AfterEffects etc.etc. there is still only one means of seeing internet live animation as standard throughout all browsers without requiring plugins or media players etc. and that's the GIF animation which is an out of date standard and in dire need of revamping.

Macromedia (Now Adobe) Flash paved the path to a new way of getting much better quality animations into our browsers which requires the Shockwave Flash plugin but as yet it is still not standard nor has it replaced GIF animation even though the filesizes can be considerably smaller with much more complicated animations.

The problem being with Flash as it is interactive allowing for links and external media content they can deliver some nasty surprises - viruses, trojans, keyloggers, links to unsuitable sites etc. whereas with GIF the animation is all you get so no nasty surprises when it plays on your browser.

So until they develop a safe standard way of delivering animations into our browsers with smaller filesizes and better graphics then we are stuck with the GIF format.

There are no magic tricks to reducing the overall filesize other than good optimisation.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
I'm having more trouble getting the right snow effect this week rather than sorting the animation...

There was something about making snow effects in Advanced Photoshop Magazine this month.. I guess I'll be trying that.

Just beautiful Becky and Vibeke. Lex, congratulations on ur award!!

The quality of the .wav file isnt particularly good due to compression but hopefully its acceptable.

Thanks Anna. Brilliant as always and the sound effects really make it work beautifully. How could I possibly begin to compete with you professionals?!

Blimey Becky Amiga A1200 that's a blast from the past. my first real PC after playing with Sinclair ZX Spectrum's the first of which you had to build yourself with a massive 16k of memory.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Thanks very much Becky for info and techinal advice. Really helps, makes much sense and gives me confidence to get out of this (yes I'm in there). (Ps my file is still too big, and not finished yet!! :; , but can always do a James et al with a link ).

I don't know what an A1200 is. I've worked on some very expensive stuff in the distant past with, ASCII, vector graphics and pixel manipulation, writing the user aps for that, but don't go there, its finished thank g' . (Pre PC and Photoshop! )

All the work is great. Anna's really got me laughing and happy, difficult. I don't know how Vibeke did all that.

Nick, I was doing similar to you, especially with the light. You've son a great job, mine was not there, and don't need to do it now.

So seeing all your work, something different coming here, if I can execute.

****Oh and important for us animation novices, don't forget of course Steve's CS3 book chapter 15 ( note recognition to Becky ) and the associated DVD movie ..... I'm taxiing Hope to reach V2 in these busy times ......
