Re: Challenge 411: Glasses shadow revisited
Not sure if I can manage to do what I want in the time so I will post this now, and the 1st time I did this challenge I didn't have any glasses to practice with, now I've got two pairs! ![]() |

Re: Challenge 411: Glasses shadow revisited
First to add the shadow this week was Sjef, who solved the puzzle by taking a photo from a similar angle. A great idea, Sjef, but check out the angle of the shadow behind the coin: the light is clearly coming from the other side of it. Shouldn't the shadow of the glasses be the same distance, and the same direction? An elegant shadow from James, very much in the right direction - and I see you've also gone to the trouble of removing the coin from the scene. A really funny animated version, as the glasses run away from the approaching hand - and I like the way the take a couple of steps to return to their starting position! A good-looking shadow from tooquilos - but it appears straight down beneath the lenses, it should really sit this side of them (look at the shadow on the coin). I like the animated version - now that's exactly why I've never opted for laser surgery! A great angle on the shadow from Garfield72, matching the shadow on the coin very well. But the shadow of the frames seems rather thin, compared to the frame thickness, don't you think? Very clever work from Linda.Eckert, who has not only created a shadow but placed the glasses on a newspaper front page. The cleverness here comes from the distortion of the page through the lenses - a great touch! But wouldn't they magnify more than that? I like the way Frank has brightened the view of the table through the reflected lenses, which certainly gives them a glassy feel. But would lenses really do this? Surely they'd cut down some light, if only a little, rather than adding to it? A good angle, though, and neat coin removal. I was amused by Ant Snell's rose tinted specs, particularly the way they have their effect on the shadow as well. It looks to me as if you've flipped the reflection horizontally to create it, which means the left lens is now smaller than the right - and this is at odds with our view of the glasses themselves. A soft shadow from Arijel - but look at the coin: its shadow is very crisp and hard-edged. And while I like the idea of seeing the pencil through the glasses, surely it would be magnified or otherwise distorted by the lenses? And wouldn't the pencil cast its own shadow? A very well-judged shadow from Deborah Morley, falling entirely appropriately in terms of angle and position. Is it a little thin, though? Those frames look rather thick to me, and surely the shadow should be at least as thick. I like the subtle darkening of the table through the reflected lenses. An interesting shadow from Jimbean, who clearly had some trouble deciding how to join the right arm onto the main body of the glasses. The answer - bring it in closer, so it matches the glasses above! And would the lenses' shadow really be brighter than the table top? A good thickness of shadow from Jota120, but the angle - straight down, with the light source directly above the glasses - doesn’t match the angle of the shadow from the coin. Maybe you should put it back and take another look! Artwel's shadow may not be precisely on course, but I like the treatment of the scene - that table now looks much more like a heavily scarred desk, a sense that's aided by the pencil lying in front of it. Artwel, you would have liked a Challenge from back in 2005 when I asked members to artificially age a school desk I'd just built, before I went ahead and distressed the real thing. ___________________________________ So how did the real shadow look? For the good order, here is the photo I took of my own glasses, compared with my contribute (right). ![]() |

Re: Challenge 411: Glasses shadow revisited
Sjef, that's very interesting. Your light source was obviously a lot closer than mine, which is why your shadow shows it to be directly above the body of the glasses (and the glare on the table shows this, as well). It just shows that resorting to "real life" doesn't always guarantee the right results! |

Dear Jota120 Your French is very good, better as my English, because my native language is German. The shadow of your glasses: I reconstructed the scene and took a picture. You can compare: the shadow of the sidepiece on the right is similar with yours. Goodbye at the next challenge! ![]() |

Re: Challenge 411: Glasses shadow revisited
Dear Linda, Well my German just a little bit better than French maybe in theory as I lived/worked in near Karlsruhe for almost a year. A long time ago. Go to France, China and Spain more frequently now. Ich vergesse nicht, mein kleines Deutsch sprechen. Very good motorcycle friends Yes I took a similar approach but your work much more interesting and correct than mine. Thank you. Trevor P |

Re: Challenge 411: Glasses shadow revisited
Steve, the lens is important too (wide-angle vs zoom) . I don't see much different with my original and Sjef. Interesting challenge. My light source was the sun (infinity for all purposes), though don't see it often here, so had to be quick ![]() |

Re: Challenge 411: Glasses shadow revisited
Thanks Steve - I photographed a similar pair of glasses to replicate the shadow -- did get the glow on table under the lens -- it doesn't take much movement of a light source to dramatically change the shadow(s). |
