First to dive into the pool this week was Frank, with a riot of summer fun. There’s so much detail here: the kids in the pool, the the posters on the walls, the steps leading up, the pool toys. But it’s the attention to detail that really gets me: not just the splashes around the edge of the water, which really make it look like it’s in the pool, but the barely-visible 8 ball logo at the bottom of the pool. Fabulous work, Frank. Looks like you enjoyed this one. Hope the cough eases soon. A cool scene from tooquilos, with a redecorated pool house that’s now a beachfront property. I like the water effect. Love the HOT shimmer in the animated version, the exploding thermometer and the dripping sweat. The frozen pool at the end is cute. Really fun. I don’t know where DavidMac gets his stock of garden gnomes, but there are some truly bizarre ones here. Topless sunbathing? Mankinis? And so many actually photographed from behind? Bizarre. A great image, though, and the reflections are spot on. Best of all, of course, is the ruler diving board clamped to the edge. An ingenious second entry, completely subverting the theme. Beautifully executed; I just hope those pool balls are inflated. I did enjoy the Pool Harbour setting of the third entry - so much so that I won’t even comment on the curious mix of perspectives. Oh, if you insist: the water action seems to be photographed from the wrong angle. Here’s a possible solution: 
A slick hot tub from Vibeke, fitting neatly into place. The new view works well, and I like all the luxurious extras. The only thing I’d change is the angle of that chair: 
It’s pool meets bowls from michael sinclair, starting with a curious filmed set of drifting pool balls that rather bizarrely disappear into nothingness. Not sure about the pattern overlaid over the top, but I do like the detail of the tilting coke in the bottle. The gentle oscillation in the second entry is good, although the green water is a little disturbing. Not sure what to make of the scrolling pattern in the third entry: the Glass filter has its uses, but I’m not sure this is one of them. A tropical setting from Ben Boardman, whose pool table now serves as a pond for local wildlife. Very neatly done, with the reflection of the foliage tying it all together perfectly. Good work. Splashy fun from Ant Snell, mixing up pool, snooker and some aquatic sport I can’t quite identify (water polo, perhaps?). No wonder Steve Davis can’t compete - how do you play a game with only two balls? A tidy reconstruction from Mariner, as we’ve come to expect from the restoration master. The angles and perspectives are all perfect. But here’s my main niggle: the shadow around the pool edge suggests the sun coming from top left. In which case, shouldn’t all that glazing be casting its shadows on the floor? As well as the towel rack, of course. Military action from GKB, with a battleship that the pool can barely contain. Not sure about the cottage on the left - is that a view, or a poster? The animated version makes it all much clearer, and the rolling 3D model boat and helicopter work beautifully. I keep waiting for something to drop out of the helicopter and land on the boat, though. |

Steve, despite what you say about me being a restoration master I still have a lot to learn, if I ever do. I spent a couple of hours creating the many shadows for the walls, and at the end they just didn't look right, even when I faded them away at the roof ends. The shadows from the (out of the picture) roof would also need to appear on the pool edges and on the woman and that would have taken another couple of hours, with no guarantee of success. Suffering a little from burnout, I finally decided to have them coming down from an azimuth of 90% (vertical) which on a fairly dull day makes them virtually invisible. Maybe. |

Thanks Steve, and have fun on vacation. Family Doctor told me could take up to 3 months for full recovery - I have my ups and down days and yes that cough persists along with a little fatigue. Stay Safe All - it’s still out there. |
