Frank I missed saying earlier on that I really like your entry. It has a very fine 'painterly' quality to it. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 993: Kiss me, Hardy
Another little known fact about Hardy is that, following his friend's demise, he adopted Buddhism. The body has a couple of oddities but, aside from something uncomfortable about the roots of his hair, the face is, to my eye, quite astonishingly convincing. This one has been much trickier than it looks at first sight. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

That's more or less what I had in mind, David. Beautifully done. Mariner, the pose and facial expressions are priceless. I laughed. Excellent work, Ben. _________________ Wicked Witch of the West:I'll get you, my pretty! And your little dog, too! |

Ha! I thought I was the only one who knew that he converted to Buddhism! Thanks David. BTW it took me ages to get the face right. |

Re: Challenge 993: Kiss me, Hardy
First to re-arm Hardy this week was Frank, with a splendid recreation of the man holding a picture of Nelson’s ship. I can’t work out if you’ve recoloured the statue or found a painting from the same angle, or perhaps a combination of the two… so I’d take that as a compliment. A couple of issues: never present anything square on to the viewer, or it will look pasted-on; and watch that hard shadow behind the painting. Apart from being too strong, it needs to respect the contour of the person behind it: I enjoyed tooquilos's Davros (although as our resident Whovian Josephine will point out Davros had two real arms). A fine setting, although perhaps the blaster pointing out from under his shirt could have been removed. Great movement in the animated version, and an inspired choice of soundtrack! A different Hardy altogether from Josephine Harvatt, and a beautifully statuefied (?) Hardy it is too. I like the new inscription, and the addition of Stan Laurel at the bottom. Quick tip: when you’re creating elements such as the tie, it’s a lot easier to copy existing texture rather than to try and paint it from scratch. Some interesting historical context from Ben Boardman, along with a splendid reconstruction of the scene in question. My only issue here is that the characters in the foreground are too saturated and a little too dark to match the painting behind; easily fixed: The realistic entry is a terrific piece of work: excellent colouring, with exceptionally realistic eyes and mouth. I tend to add a slight five o’clock shadow to men, just to give their jaws a little extra definition. I like lwc's robot hands, although I’m not sure about the way they join onto the sleeves. The Michael Sinclair-style oscillating head works well. A fun approach from Ant Snell, with added iPhone. I like the goofiness of this image. I do have to point out, though, that your Hardy has two right arms – try that pose in the mirror and you’ll see what I mean. LWC spotted it. DavidMac has a novel take on this one, with Hardy mounting Nelson’s column (settle down in the back, it isn’t clever and it isn’t funny). The clever placement means only a fraction of a body needed to be found, and I do appreciate the added hand. The Toby jug entry is splendid – great shine on the face. I like michael sinclair’s oscillating hands, but it’s the slight smirk that really works for me. there’s a curious artefact that looks like a hair in the gate over the upper arms on both sides – what can this be? And thanks for your research on neuralgia, which more or less matches with mine. Although I refuse to subscribe to your particular brand of pessimism. I’ve often wondered why so many military and naval heroes liked to be depicted in togas, and Mariner takes it to extremes by giving Hardy the full treatment. The belly button is a glorious touch. Great colouring and body matching; but the best feature for me is the way you’ve used the statue elements to craft the bench. |

An enjoyable challenge with some clever responses from all. Climbing Nelsons column, Buddhism, Laurel and Hardy, Dr. Who. Thank you for your comments Gordon, Andrew & Anna. Thank you Steve, the lower saturation really improves it. |
