Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
Well this is off to great start.

Ben I've already complimented. Frank I love the mood in yours. It has a very Canadian atmosphere to it.

Anna your image is marvellous I'm sure Freddy's going to love it! Like Loyd, I'm I am afraid I am getting the 'cannot find' message for your video.

This is the main part of a larger work in progress. I am working further on the idea of "wooden town", so I may post an extended image later on.

Freddy is taking Mum and Dad for a ride. Not sure if he knows something about Freddy's driving that we don't, but Dad looks rather nervous about it ..............

I have no idea what is going on with Vimeo but here it is again.

Mariner, I think you're right. Something looked odd about the wheels regardless of which way I spun them - maybe they're going too fast? I'm confused.

David, your wooden town is fabulous. Is it from the Pirates of the Caribbean or Jungle Cruise in Disneyland? It looks very familiar. The name is brilliant!

Works now... my goodness, what lovely work Anna.

Speed of the wheels looks okay, turning clockwise but need to be counter-clockwise.

Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
In response to the comments about Anna’s wheels, this might be due to the stroboscopic effect. If the wheels were rotated in synch with the frame rate they would appear to be stationary; change the rotation and they would then appear to rotate either correctly or, even go backwards.

The classic example is in old cowboy films with a stagecoach being chased by robbers where the front wheels are going forwards but the rear wheels are going backwards.

Sorry if I am a bit nerdy this week🤣🤣🤣

Not sure if I can participate in Freddy’s train but excellent work from all so far

And well worth waiting for. I am sure Freddy's going to love it!

You've just hit that unfortunate combination of rotation speed and frame rate that causes the backward effect.

David, your wooden town is fabulous. Is it from the Pirates of the Caribbean or Jungle Cruise in Disneyland?

I had a very disappointing time searching for 'rustic wooden buildings'. Lots of log cabins and wild west towns. Fun, but they didn't really match or fit with the wonderful naive simplicity of Freddy's locomotive.

Then I hit on the idea of searching for 'wooden adventure playground', and there they were! Just what I wanted! I can't tell you where this one is apart from somewhere in the US. There are lots of very similar ones in different places.

I am currently doing a lot of cobbling together to see if I can pursue this further. If I manage I'll post an extended version.

Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
I see Gordon just beat me to it on the stroboscopic effect while I was still preparing my post.

Ant I somehow missed yours earlier. It landed exactly on the break between pages. More giggles. I really like the oversized caricatured riders.

Thanks for the tip-off David, I shall use it if I may, as I was struggling with that background.

Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
I've learnt something today - never heard of this stroboscopic effect before. Thank you Gordon and David for the explanation.

Also, many thanks for the positive comments. I hope Freddy enjoys all our entries. He's certainly a remarkable young man.

Frank, great atmosphere in your out west image, love the lighting. I've been in towns like that in the US, you convey it well.

Anna, a wonderful portrait of Freddy, worthy of hanging on the Caplan wall.

David, I am always inspired by your big projects, I look forward to your timber town.

Ant, you've captured that well.

Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
This is the second week for one reason or another I haven't been able to participate in the challenges; however, Here is a rather pleased Freddy in his new position as station master at Bewdley railway station.

Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
Just in time ..........

I said I wanted to pursue the idea of a wooden town further. I have tried to do it in the simple spirit of Freddy's locomotive.

Whilst I had a lot of fun I cannot really pretend it's a success. Firstly it completely removes the focus from Freddy. Even if we accept that this is a completely different image with a different intent I still don't feel I have really pulled it off. I have had quite a busy week and was quite unable to give this the time needed.

At first glimpse it looks good but it doesn't withstand close analysis. It's full of minor perspective and other anomalies and, somehow, looks far too 'arranged'.

I also owe some apologies to the HTCP members I have managed to feature in a less than entirely respectful manner, in particular Loyd whose splendid craggy lived in face I have taken advantage of in a peculiarly unflattering manner. Sorry Loyd .... I couldn't resist. Feel free to retaliate!

You can click this image twice to really zoom in.

Re: Challenge 999: Freddy's train
First to ride Freddy’s train this week was Ben Boardman, with a splendid wooden railway bridge. Good to see Gordon and Josephine riding it – and is that me perched on the front? I like the HotChiPs branding, and the Fast Freddy logo on the side. And I see you’ve added a brake! Can you explain the emu?

Magnificent woodwork from Frank, whose wooden water tower and signal box really se the scene well. Good job bending the shadow over the trucks. I like the added coal, and of course Freddy in the branded signal box. Very nice work.

Off to Hogwarts for tooquilos, with Freddy kitted out in his Gryffindor colours. I like the train perched on the suitcases. A great construction story told in the animated version – I particularly like the recoloured version as the child’s toy. The train wheels do seem to be turning backwards, though. Excellent.

DavidMac has had the ingenious idea of placing the train in front of a wooden play frame (and what a magnificent play frame it is). I like the way he’s leaning out of the cab, and there’s Carol and me sitting in the back! Beautifully done. Can’t fault it. The extended version is clearly a work of some passion, and it is glorious to behold. Fitting in so many Forum members was a great idea, and it has been done with taste and wit. Curiously, the only thing that doesn’t work for me here is the ground shadows, which somehow don’t belong to the objects. But that’s a minor quibble: this is a tremendous piece of work.

Ant Snell’s rollercoaster is a great ride, and the passengers seem to be, er, enjoying themselves. The smoke is perhaps more cigar than locomotive, but I’ll let that pass. Do they really make wooden rollercoasters? Seems rather dangerous to me.

It may not be strictly on topic, but michael sinclair’s railway scene is utterly charming. I’m sure Freddy will like his new elevated job.

Good work this week!
