Michael (Sinclair) Filmora looks encouraging!

Michael (Mariner) that's quite extraordinary. I would not have expected your clean precision to work so successfully in this context .... but it does!

Thank you Gordon. We all seem to have made the best of a horrible photo.

Thank you David. I did the best I could with the very boring and depressing photograph.

In 1944 you had to use the Ghost Passage to get to Canterville.

Thanks for the positive remarks.

Again using Filmora video editor.

It seemed like a good idea at the time

As usual, many great and varied entries - nice work all. To quote Mariner " a horrible photo".

Some brilliant stuff this week from Carry on Nurse to Ghostbusters! Amazed at all the detail in Anna's animation and loved the intro - Gordon - I told you to be careful with that chainsaw!
Hope your decrepitude gets better Michael.

Here's my late offering - for those who don't know "Ghosts" is a sitcom about spirits from various time periods that haunt a mansion

Not sure why everyone is being so down on Steve's photograph. There's no reason to suppose the photos necessarily have to be fascinating. It's a challenge ..... what we can do with it!!

Michael, your skeleton really made me smile. Ghosts are supposed to be condemned to endlessly repeat some terrible end. Burning must be the most horrible imaginable, yet this guy's really enjoying himself!

Frank I think that must be the most ambitious animation we've ever seen from you. It's beautifully done but I rather lost the plot somewhere in the middle ....... my dim wits ........

Thanks Josephine, however, "incipient decrepitude" was a tongue-in-cheek remark that meant I'm getting older...who are you?...where am I?

Thanks David. I created a Gif in Photoshop then exported it to Filmora and converted it to MP4.

Re: Challenge 1004: The ghost passage
Peppers Ghost is a stage effect that has been around since the mid nineteenth century. I used it many years ago myself to create a low budget movie ghost before the days of digital effects. Even now it is still used. The ballroom in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion is a perfect example.

It uses a sheet of glass to partially reflect one scene in front of another making it appear transparent. The effect depends very much on the orientation of the mirror. In my example here the upright skeletons in the pit would appear to float horizontally with their heads towards the spectator.

You have to imagine the street as a stage set with the spectators seated off to the right at an eye level where the pit in the stage floor is invisible to them.

I completely ran out of time on this one, so it is very crudely done and lacks plausibility. But it was quite an interesting idea to try and create.

Thank you all for your comments. I love the headless Gordon ghost. Brilliant.
Josephine, funny enough, I just finished watching Ghosts and absolutely loved it. It's such a clever and funny show. The dynamics between the cast members works very well. Did you know they are the same group of people who did 'Horrible Histories'?

Re: Challenge 1004: The ghost passage
First to get spooky this week was lwc, with a veiled ghost hovering over a prone skeleton. Great angle on the skeleton, and I like the opened blue door. The wider arch gives more room for that disturbingly childlike ghost, matching the angle of the original well. What’s that above the window, though? Some sort of balcony? Great lighting in the third entry, flickering over the two skeletons lying on the floor. There’s something about this image that reminds me of an early video game I played in the early 90s, that involved a lot of wandering around stone corridors. Wolfenstein? Can’t remember which one. The scythe seems to have done its job here, Loyd. Your homage to the Canterville Ghost is charming, and the rocking bodies do bring it to life. A very cute Ghostbusters entry! What a friendly ghost.

A curious entry from Ant Snell, with a selection of oddly-named streets. Just as well it cuts off before Bell End. What are the dark semicircles spilling out of each entrance? I don’t think shadows work like that.

I was going to suggest that michael sinclair’s lightning-filled archway had nothing to do with this week’s topic, then after about a minute a platoon of soldiers marched out of it. Now I’m convinced it has nothing to do with this week’s topic. Ah, here we go! You were just flexing your muscles. The second entry is spot on, with some truly ghostly marching soldiers. They remind me of the movies of Ray Harryhausen. A very neatly widened arch, by the way. I love the dancing skeleton! Hilarious! The entry beginning with the hand breaking through the pavement starts with great promise, but I’m not sure the AI-generated skull figures at the end really add much to it.

What’s more interesting than DavidMac mistyping into Google is what he considers to be a typical masseur. The rubber gloves are both intriguing and deeply worrying. (It reminds me of the time many years ago when I was doing an illustration about paparazzi and wanted to have one coming up out of a drain, so I googled “manhole cover”. That was a mistake.) I like the lit windows, and especially the lighting over the door. The way the light catches the underneath of the broken pediment (architectural jargon alert) is spot on. A clever Ghostbusters entry, with the light streaming from the bottom of the widened arch. But why are they so much smaller than the man at the far end? That looks off to me.

I am familiar with the Pepper's Ghost illusion, but I’m having trouble interpreting it here… can’t quite make sense of what’s going on. I think it’s a gestalt thing, and it hasn’t clicked with me yet.

There’s a real sense of depth to tooquilos's ghostly passage, aided by the watery floor and the merest hint of a spook within. The dripping blood is a good addition. As David and Loyd say, the hand on the window really makes it. I like how the animated version changes perspective to look straight down the passage to see the ghouls… very well devised.

Interesting how GKB has used his image as a poster for the animation, rather than a still for it – which builds up our expectation nicely. The audio intro in the movie sets the scene well, and I like how the title comes out of the doorway. Ha ha – you make a brilliant ghost! If somewhat fuller in the figure than your typical ghost. You dressed up specially for this! And you matched the head turn with the turn of the body… great attention to detail. Not sure the fire in the doorway helps; it’s more of a distraction.

I was truly taken by surprise by Mariner's entry, with its truly original approach to the paranormal. That’s the most bizarre ghost I’ve ever seen, Michael: the candles on the antlers, the fabric-shredded body, those hand-drawn hands… you’ve really gone to town on this one. A curious mismatch between the angle of the ghost and the angle of the passage, though… maybe the hand and one antler should be concealed behind the edge of the wall, as the skirt is? Or maybe it’s just leaning forward.

A glorious collection of ghostly figures from Ben Boardman. I’m really interested in how you achieved this effect: are they simply desaturated and inverted? It’s a very effective technique. The muted colours really work well here, and the figures fit the scene perfectly. Excellent stuff.

Excellent titles to Frank's animation, with truly spooky goings-on. The girl being flung out of the passage is especially impressive. So many ghosts! I like the headless man walking towards us at the end, and the relocated road sign. Where did you find this soundtrack? I can’t believe it’s you doing the voiceover, unless your avatar is seriously misleading us…

I’ve never seen the sitcom Ghosts, but judging from Josephine Harvatt’s parade of characters it’s a real drain on the costume department. What a lot of characters! And there’s the Ghostbusters logo emblazoned on the wall. Charming stuff.

____

It was, as Mariner says, a "horrible photo". But look at what came out of it! Imagination + skill = Friday Challenge. I'm not always going to make it easy for you.

Thank Steve. I have a collection of these images on file. They are paper mache mannequins populating a railway station museum. I reduced density & added an outer glow. Another enjoyable challenge.
